Principal HV Design Engineer in North Yorkshire, Yorkshire and the Humber, North Yorkshire, United Kingdom

My client a leading contractor to the rail sector require a Principal HV Design Engineer to join them on a permanent basis at their York office, where you will be focused on rail electrification projects, products and services.

As the Principal HV Design Engineer you will be responsible for the leadership of our growing team of HV engineers and engineering delivery across the portfolio of railway Electrification and Plant projects. You will use your extensive design and construction experience to guide the optimal development of design to meet environmental, safety, cost and programme objectives.

A bit about the role

Reporting to the Professional Head for HV/LV Distribution, as the successful applicant you will continue to develop the team to deliver consistent high-quality engineering delivery from concept and bid support to successful entry in to service.

A key element of this role is collaborating with engineering delivery colleagues and colleagues within alliance and product organisations across the wider business.

The team have demonstrated the ability to successfully deliver Electrification and Plant projects and support the integration of novel technology into UK railway, driving down the cost of UK electrification and decarbonisation through application of the full range of internationally proven electrification technologies and integration into legacy railway. This is a unique opportunity, leading a team of specialists that are redefining what is possible in UK railway electrification.

As the Principal Design Engineer in performing your role you will be required to work closely with the clients, Project Managers, the business Design Delivery Manager and all third-party designers to ensure a coordinated and collaborative design solution is presented for all projects.

Responsibilities within the role

  • Focus on individual and team development to expand the Electrification and Plant Design teams through mentoring, training, developing and recruiting system design engineers through delivery of training, hands-on demonstration, example and performance management.
  • To manage the development of fully compliant suitable designs to meet the requirements of the contract, with overall responsibility for assurance of all team delivery so that technical and safety standards are maintained, costs minimised, constructability and future reliability optimised.
  • Monitor delivery throughout to ensure consistent delivery of high-quality results on time and budget.
  • Where called for, act as Contractors’ Responsible Engineer and/or Contractors Engineering Manager (CEM) in compliance with I NR/L2/INI/02009.
  • To positively influence design and construction safety performance and aims for zero accidents
  • To review project-based risk register monitoring and reporting on changes in commercial risk and ensure that appropriate actions are taken to eliminate or mitigate the risks.
  • To maintain effective communications with all project participants to ensure contract delivery;
  • To manage the development of fully compliant suitable designs to meet the requirements of the contract and/or related Engineering documents.
  • At a project level, lead and inspire designers by example and through the maintenance of team vision, standards and morale. Provide Design leadership for the design team that covers cross discipline work streams to provide an integrated solution for the customer.
  • Management and coordination of interdisciplinary designs i.e. Civils, Signalling, SCADA, M&E, Protection & Control and Telecoms etc;
  • Support to senior team in the review and appraise of tender specs and associated project documents;
  • Understand primary interfaces, design drivers and stakeholders on projects that will influence the technical design;
  • To positively influence design and construction safety performance and aims for zero accidents;
  • To support the project commercial process;
  • To ensure that all project designs are compliant with CDM and CSM RA regulations.
  • To review project-based risk register monitoring and reporting on changes in commercial risk and ensure that appropriate actions are taken to eliminate or mitigate the risks
  • Support and mentor junior and seasoned engineers in maintaining CPD and development

Qualifications, Skills and Experience Required

  • Engineering degree or HND in a relevant discipline
  • Professional membership of the IET or equivalent as an Chartered Engineer
  • Ideally hold an Authority to Work (AtW) in line with NR/L2/INI/02009 and/or previous evidence of competencies
  • In Depth Knowledge of Railway Electrification Infrastructure and associated discipline standards
  • Demonstrable AC electrification, substation and LV E&P design experience
  • Full understanding of Health, Safety, Quality and Environmental procedures
  • Demonstrable safety management knowledge including CDM and CSM requirements
  • Extensive experience of Electrical Engineering design work including the use of relevant software packages
  • Sufficient safety knowledge to guarantee that all designs meet legal safety requirements.
  • Good communication and interpersonal skills be able to effectively communicate and report at all levels
  • A current AC/DC PTS would be advantageous
  • Previous exposure/experience working TNO/DNO in the provision of Bulk Supply Points (BSP’s) desirable

Applicants that are within an extended distance of York may be able to work from an alternate location, so long as they can be in York circa two days per week.
