Public Highways Design Engineer

About the role

We have an exciting opportunity for a Senior Highway Design Engineer to join our business unit to work in Southampton. The role will involve developing a range if schemes in Southampton from feasibility to construction. This includes delivering Southampton’s Transforming Cities programme of schemes that aim to have a transformative impact on people’s journeys by bus, walking and cycling.

What you'll be doing

As a Highway Designer Engineer, you will have the following accountabilities:

Leadership and Management

• Be responsible for the technical delivery of design works for allocated projects
• Manage other team members working on allocated projects.
• Manage third party inputs into allocated projects.

Communications & Liaison

• Work with the Design Manager in the planning and delivery of design work.
• Liaise with internal teams (including Project Management, Delivery, Asset Management, Communications) in developing designs and project delivery.
• In conjunction with other team members, liaise with Southampton City Council officers and Councillors to understand customer requirements and to keep them informed of project progress.
• Undertake liaison with members over the public as required in the development of the design for projects, including public consultation events.

Planning

• Prepare programme information for design projects and liaise with project managers and the programme coordinator to incorporate this information in project and the integrated programme.
• Monitor the delivery of design work against the agreed programme and ensure the efficient delivery of design to agreed programmes. Advise the project manager of the current status of progress against programme at regular intervals.
• Advise the project manager of any changes to the agreed programme and input into change control processes relating to programme.

Finance

• Prepare estimates of level of design input for projects and liaise with the design manager and project manager to include these in submissions to Southampton City Council.
• Monitor the spend against the agreed activity schedule on allocated projects to ensure expenditure is within agreed values.
• Advise the project manager of any matters that may impact the delivery of the project and input into
• the change control process.

Operations

• Deliver design work in line with local and national standards and company policies and procedures.
• Keep up to date with industry best practice to ensure design is undertaken in line with that.
• Apply the CDM regulations to all design work and ensure designs meet the requirements and principles of the safety systems
• Apply the company Behaviours in all aspects of work.
• Business Development
• Support the Design Manager and Design and Build Manager in the development of new opportunities to provide design services.
• Identify opportunities for improvement and utilise the company ‘My Contribution’ system to progress these.
• Work with the Design Manager and other members of the Design & Build team in implementing improvement initiatives

Who we're looking for.

You will have the following qualities and experience:

• Proven Experience utilising software including AutoCad and BIM (Building Information Modelling)
• Experience and understanding of on and off the public highway on construction sites.
• Experience of NEC Option 3 contract type
• Experience and understanding of CDM regulations, and risk.
• PC Literate and knowledge of MS suite i.e. Word, Excel, Project etc.
• Good forward planner
• Design or technical background
• Good knowledge of all aspects of a construction project
• Good communication and people skills
• Work well under pressure
• Ability to present ideas effectively
• Able to evaluate ideas of others
