Signal Design Engineer in Glasgow, United Kingdom
My client, a UK rail design consultancy have the need for a Signal Design Engineer to join an existing team working on some major rail projects.
Primary Duties:
- Undertake any work of a technical nature that falls within your ability and competence.
- Work at any position within a design project team to achieve the project objectives
- Supervise the work of other staff
- When required, undertake the roles of Activity Manager and Designer
- Preparation of safety critical signalling design, plans and technical details, ensuring compliance with all contractual and statutory requirements
Level of Competence: Competent to work under minimum supervision
Reports to: Signal Design Manager (line manager).
Typical Activities:
- Preparation of engineering solutions, presentation of engineering options
- Preparation of feasibility studies, outline project specifications and other relevant written documents.
- Production of signalling layouts (mechanical, relay and solid state).
- Production of design concepts, drawings, specifications and other technical documents.
- Production checking of team’s work prior to independent check.
- Site visits and correlation surveys, inspection of equipment and condition monitoring, including mentoring of junior staff in these activities.
- Undertaking design office cover during commissioning works.
- Delivery of work (personal workload and that of suppliers and technicians under the Job Holder’s control) to programme, budget and specification
- Mentoring of junior staff within the Section
- Planning, monitoring and reporting of project resources, billable hours and delivery timescales
- Ensure that design is effectively produced using the CAD system in accordance with office procedures.
- Updating of designs and records.
- Client and third party liaison
- Representing the company on technical matters.
- Marketing and business development.
Qualifications:
- HNC/HND or equivalent but relevant experience may be accepted in lieu
- IRSE Designer Licence
- Corporate Membership of the IRSE (desirable)
Experience:
A minimum of 5 years relevant experience in the design of signalling layouts, with a good knowledge of conventional interlocking technologies and the interfaces to computer based systems. A good knowledge of rail industry practice and familiarity with railway standards is essential.
IT Skills: The Jobholder should be conversant with the use of MS Office suite. The Jobholder should also be capable of the production of drawings using Microstation.
Site Skills: PTS is a preferred of the role.
Location: The position is office/home based, but may require visits to clients, suppliers, third parties and work sites as required.
