Signalling Design Engineer

We are looking for a talented and enthusiastic Signalling Designer to join our lively Rail team in Manchester and help us shape a better world.

Working with our world class team of dynamic engineers and designers, this role will cover an extremely wide variety of nationally important projects both in the UK and overseas.

Our office contains talented multidisciplinary designers, planners, engineers, consultants and technical specialists offering a broad range of professional services and expertise including railway design, construction, installation and commissioning.

You will be part of a team responsible for the successful delivery of our design commissions for major clients, contractors (in a design and build context) and other agencies such as Train Operators, Councils, Passenger Transport Executives and academic institutions.

Role

We are looking for a passionate, commercially aware Signalling Designer with sound technical knowledge to be an integral part of our Rail team

Ensuring the successful delivery of technically excellent multidisciplinary rail projects and bids across our UK portfolio, you will be responsible for, and typical activities will include:

  • Determining the signalling design requirements from our client brief, making sound decisions to produce the right design solution.

  • Producing the required signalling design to multidisciplinary design teams on large or medium sized projects.

  • Signalling designs and calculations within enhancement and renewal projects.

  • Sharing knowledge, best practice and innovation across our business, providing guidance, training and feedback with other related disciplines and skills, locally and across the UK.

  • Managing your own personal development utilising our in house and external training opportunities, with the freedom to work independently.

  • Mentoring more junior employees as part of a strong development culture across our business.

Requirements

Essential Skills and Knowledge

  • Experienced within complex signalling design/multidisciplinary projects with an underpinning knowledge of signalling design and interlocking principles, standards, components, and fabrication methods.

  • Significant hands-on experience of production of detailed signalling principles design and calculations.

  • Experience of RRI or mechanical or SSI systems, ideally all three.

  • Knowledge of railway systems, and the key interactions between other railway assets, and with railway operating practices.

  • Experience in the use of signalling software packages (Plans, Gwire, etc)

Desirable Skills and Knowledge

  • Knowledge of the design of other systems or data preparation would be an advantage.

  • Knowledge of signalling construction methods and installation practices.

  • Experience in the management of a signalling and train control team or project team.

Qualifications

  • Appropriate HND or Higher qualification would be an advantage.

  • IRSE licence category 1.1.1510 - Signalling Designer

  • Ideally, an associate member of the IRSE and an Incorporated Engineer.
