We are currently seeking to recruit enthusiastic and conscientious Signalling Design Managers / Design CREs to join our rail Signalling Business at various locations across the UK including, Glasgow, York, Birmingham and Swindon. As part of Atkins Signalling Business, you will have the opportunity to develop your design delivery skills, and experience across all phases of project delivery including feasibility, option selection, single option development, detailed design and in support of installation, testing and project close out. The breadth and complexity of project opportunities you can expect within Atkins is truly enormous. We have teams delivering designs for major resignalling schemes, like the Feltham re-signalling programme, using the latest interlocking and control systems technologies and our “Advanced Signalling Method” (ASM) delivery process. You may also find yourself supporting the delivery of multi-disciplinary design packages for station enhancements, track renewals, level crossing upgrades and even small-scale consultancy remits. Essential Requirements:

  • Hold a current IRSE 7.8.110E Engineering Manager (Design) Licence or holds (or is working towards) CRE competency in line with NR/L2/RSE/02009/01.
  • Leadership experience in the delivery of signalling design projects, work packages and design commissions as Design Manager and/or Design CRE.
  • Extensive mainline signalling design experience, including knowledge of UK railway standards, design processes and procedures at outline (scheme development) and/or detailed design stages of delivery.
  • Evidence of a strong commitment to the delivery of signalling designs to the highest standards of safety and quality along with a clear understanding of risk assessment / hazard identification, management and mitigation throughout the signalling design process.
  • Experience of work package management and the ability to plan the delivery and financial aspects of project signalling design scope.
  • Evidence of continuing professional development and maintenance of up-to-date design skills, experience and training records.
  • Excellent communication skills and the ability to work closely with team members located in different offices including a high standard of English for written communications.

Desirable Qualifications and Experience:

  • Proven experience of undertaking Signalling Design Contractors Responsible Engineer (CRE) duties in a variety of project environments involving a range of typical technologies currently deployed in the UK.
  • Experience of signalling design / design management for early development stages as well as detailed design stages including S&C track renewals and/or Stageworks.
  • Able to communicate complex technical information to others without detailed knowledge of railway signalling systems.
  • Has previously held, or currently holds, Signalling Verifier Licence and Signalling Principles Designer licences (1.1.160 and 1.1.550).
  • Experience and/or qualification in Signal Overrun Risk Assessment.
  • Experience and/or qualification is Signal Sighting.
  • Chartered Engineer (CEng) and/or has passed the IRSE professional examinations.
  • Degree Qualification(s) in Electrical Engineering or equivalent.
  • IRSE workplace assessor.
  • PTS holder.

Key Responsibilities and Opportunities:

The primary function of the role is to manage and lead teams engaged in project delivery throughout the project lifecycle, from inception to completion, including -

  • Be responsible for the signalling design delivery of projects to ensure they comply with client requirements, company procedures, meet all operational, technical and safety principles and by doing so fulfil the role requirements of Signalling Design CRE when appointed.
  • Ensure signalling design projects/packages are successfully delivered to budget and programme.
  • Attending meetings and technical liaison with project team members, colleagues, clients and contractors.
  • Leading design input to estimates / tenders as required.
  • Line management of design staff.
  • Provide mentoring, support, guidance and development of junior staff.
