Job Description
Reporting to the Network Design Manager, the Specialist/Senior Design Engineer - Networks undertakes the day to day responsibility for management and delivery of the design aspects of Network and Voice comms tenders and projects, within agreed timescales and budgeted costs, and is responsible for its contribution to overall business performance.
The jobholder shall be capable of technically leading the development of network designs and configuration for railway projects focusing on that project's connectivity and cyber-security requirements. This includes the commissioning of new infrastructure along with delivering the service segregation and performance required by the systems that use these networks.
Success in the role will be measured primarily by the on-time within budget delivery of allocated tasks as agreed with the Network Design Manager and the Project and customer acceptance of all design deliverables.
This role will play a key role in delivering an MPLS based core network and access layer network for railway projects.
What are my Responsibilities?
The Senior Network Architect will be expected to provide technical leadership for their allocated tasks. The role includes responsibilities for the following Network Design activities as assigned by the Projects:
* Undertake Specialist Network Architect role technically leading and assisting the development of network designs
* Production of network architectural design description documents
* Production of network architecture diagrams
* Production of low-level network design and configuration
* Production of IP Addressing/Subnetting design
* Managing customer requirement and producing lower level system requirements and proposals
* Support for integration and system testing
* Provide technical support and mentorship to team members
* Interpret and influence the delivery strategy, based on the needs of these stakeholders.
* Delivery of Network engineering activities to the agreed time, cost, quality and performance requirements
* Perform the role of Contractors Responsible Engineer (CRE), with emphasis on Networks, and lead an engineering team to deliver engineering tasks
* Responsible for technical lead in safety related system design.
* Responsible for managing engineering risk elements of network designs.
* Responsible for managing design aspects of contract requirements for network projects.
* Produce engineering technical and Health and Safety documentation deliverables to meet project requirements.
* Regularly report network engineering team task progress and status.
* Ensure the appropriate standards, processes, procedures and tools are applied throughout the engineering life cycle.
* Ensure tender and project tasks are delivered in accordance with applicable Safety and Quality procedures and meet all applicable legislative, safety and customer requirements.
* Ensure tender and project tasks are delivered and undertaken in accordance with customer Health and Safety procedures and requirements within main line rail, light rail and mass transit environments.
* Initiate, develop and maintain good relationships with internal and external customers, industry associations, suppliers and partners.
* Responsible for maintaining and developing their own professional competence and mentoring engineers through the Chartered/Incorporated accreditation process.
What experience do I need to apply for this role?
Essential:
* Graduate in relevant engineering discipline or other numerate subject or equivalent experience
* Experience in providing transmission network (MPLS, IS-IS, BGP)
* A demonstrable broad experience of Network Communication Systems and Architectures especially LAN/WAN architectures and network security
* Experience in designing security solution: firewall, IDS/IPS, infrastructure
* CCNP certified or equivalent experience
* Technology knowledge of:
o Cisco ASR
o Next Generation Firewalls
o Cisco ISR
o Network Management Systems
* Experience of producing formally documented network designs and interface documents
* Knowledge and experience of configuration management and control practices
* Knowledge of the systems engineering life-cycle, cost awareness and awareness of processes involved in other engineering disciplines
* Experience of working to industry quality and safety standards
* Experience in operational telecommunication or industrial environment
* Ability to present design ideas and concepts to influence customer and supplier opinion
* Motivated, dependable and self-reliant
* Willingness to work on-site or travel
* Excellent interpersonal, presentation and communication skills.
* Full UK Driving licence.
Desirable:
* Chartered Engineer or equivalent status
* IRSE License in relevant category
* Experience in Network Rail FTNx design and architecture
* Experience in Voice over IP/Unified Communication network automation
* Experience in network automation
* Experience in providing technical leadership in demanding safety critical environments
* Technology knowledge of:
o Cisco Analogue Voice Gateways/cards (VG, ISR)
o Cisco industrial and grid switches
o Cisco Unified Communication Manager
o Redbox Voice Recording Solution
o Turret systems such as IP Trade Turret
