Electrical Engineering Manager

TXM Recruit is working in partnership with a rapidly expanding innovative rolling stock manufacture. An exciting position has risen for an Electrical Engineer & Design Manager who has proven ability to effectively lead and manage an engineering team through agreeing the team strategy, setting individual objectives, giving feedback and coaching, managing performance and developing talent.

THE POSITION

  • Lead and manage a team of Electrical Systems Engineers, Senior Electrical Engineers, and Electrical Designers, whose overall purpose is to undertake electrical engineering and design activities for the development of products, and accomplish their successful completion to time, to budget and to the necessary standards.
  • Drive team performance through setting short, medium and long-term objectives with each team member ensuring alignment with the Engineering and wider business strategy, providing regular performance feedback and holding formal performance reviews with each team member, agreeing training and development as appropriate.
  • Report progress of EE&D deliverables to the Chief Engineer on a regular basis as mutually decided, and highlight any deficiencies in time or resources that might hinder on-time delivery of project deliverables.
  • Act as design authority, and single point of contact, for all electrical matters concerning products. Validate and sign-off the work of others where this is within the bounds of your professional competence.
  • Assist in the implementation and management of peer-review processes (for example Engineering Change) and ensure that the processes are adhered to.
  • Undertake and lead FMECAs, as well as safety and reliability investigations, report outcomes and recommend solutions.
  • Deputise for the Chief Engineer when required.

PREVIOUS EXPERIENCE & QUALIFICATIONS

To be considered for this role you will be an electrical engineering graduate with at least 3 years proven leadership experience and a strong background in electrical engineering. You will be a chartered engineer (IET or former IEE) or actively working towards it.

Essential;

  • Proven ability to effectively lead and manage an engineering team through agreeing the team strategy, setting individual objectives, giving feedback and coaching, managing performance and developing talent.
  • Experience of distilling complex engineering issues into the key points in order for take or influence others to make informed decision.
  • Experience of specifying, designing and working with high and low-voltage electrical equipment, in particular 3-phase drives and motors, DC-to-DC converters, rectifiers / inverters, and IGBTs.
  • Sound knowledge and experience of power, traction and braking systems as applicable to railway rolling stock.
  • A sound, practical appreciation of detailed electrical design for manufacture and maintenance.
  • Ability to analyse energy flows and the implications for power, current, voltage and component sizing etc.
  • Ability to determine the control logic required for a given system and translate this into new electrical schematics.
  • Ability to ‘reverse engineer’ an existing electrical schematic and analyse the logic.
  • Ability to write Technical Requirement Specifications, Mod Instructions, Test Specifications and Test Procedures.

Desirable;

  • Working knowledge of Railway Group Standards and railway practice in general
  • Experience of electrical and electronic systems in a railway environment
  • Experience of electro-pneumatic systems would be an advantage
  • Practical ‘hands-on’ experience
  • Project engineering / project management experience

THE PACKAGE

  • 40 hours per week Monday to Friday- You may be expected to work additional hours depending on business requirements.
