General Description:

We are currently seeking a Senior Electrical Design Engineer with specialised skills in rail low voltage electrical design to join our Rail Team in Scunthorpe to work with our existing engineering team to deliver an expanding and exciting portfolio of rail telecommunications projects as part of an established Rail Business.

You will lead a team responsible for the successful design and delivery of electrical power to telecommunications and radio equipment along with low voltage power design for major clients including Network Rail Telecommunications, Network Rail High Speed, Transport for London, Merseytravel and other agencies such as Train Operators, Councils and Passenger Transport Executives.

Responsibilities:

The Senior Electrical Design Engineer at ADComms will undertake the following responsibilities to support the ADComms Design and Engineering department:

  • Manage an engineering design team in the production of E&P Lineside Electrical Feasibility, Scheme and Detailed Design reports, layouts, schematics, and calculations (including, 230V and 400V Supplies, Domestic Power Supplies, UPS Systems, Battery Systems and Earthing and Bonding) within multidisciplinary rail projects.
  • Undertake the role of E&P CRE for Design.
  • Able to solve engineering problems effectively and, challenge the remit, thus enabling the development of robust engineering solutions in order to provide our clients with the best engineering solution and thus offering them excellent value for money on all projects involving E&P.
  • Able to support the ADComms Engineering department in leading and managing a team of engineers for the production of detailed requirements for submission in reference system design documentation working closely and providing integrated documents with other disciplines.
  • Apply BS7671 and other railway standards to electrical power design and accountability for Technical Assurance within the discipline and all Electrical Engineering Design activities on the Network Rail infrastructure including those undertaken by sub-contractors.
  • Undertake the review of all electrical designs and of electrical bills of materials for technical designs prior to submission to the client and authorisation to purchase equipment and parts for installation of designs.
  • Undertaking and lead electrical site surveys / site visits in a railway environment across the UK and reporting on asset condition, providing design proposals based on site information and supporting the construction teams if required.
  • Interface with other discipline leads, construction teams and clients directly to ensure project delivery is undertaken to the required standards and timescales, this will included attending regular project update meetings, kick-off meetings with our clients and presenting at IDC and IDR meetings.
  • Produce, review and approve detailed risk assessments covering design installations and assist with installation planning to ensure Hazards are identified and Risks mitigated.
  • Able to interpret detailed survey information of railway infrastructure and use to produce detailed design deliverables including Single Line Diagrams, Block Cable Diagrams, General Electrical Equipment Layouts, Lighting Layouts, Earthing Layouts, Hazardous Area Layouts, Cable Schedules and Substation layouts.
  • Application of the Network Rail design deliverable process (GRIP) and manage multiple designs production and delivery to the client in accordance with timescales and budgets.
  • Assist the bid team with new bids and tenders involving electrical works.
  • Sharing knowledge, best practice and innovation across our business, providing guidance, training and feedback with other related disciplines and skills, and supporting and providing mentorship to other members of staff allowing for continuous improvement.
  • Managing client satisfaction and expectation, undertaking development reviews of staff and involvement in recruitment.

Competencies:

The Senior Electrical Design Engineer at ADComms will be responsible for applying the following competences, skills and knowledge:

  • Competent in understanding and developing complex electrical schematic drawings.
  • Competent in the use of calculation software (e.g. Trimble Prodesign/Amtech).
  • High attention to detail and able to deliver technical solutions and designs to the highest of standards.
  • An excellent understanding of Electrical design regulations including BS7671 for design and installation and Network Rail standards.
  • Experience with undertaking electrical surveys at sites across the UK and producing detailed survey reports, proposals and drawings.
  • Experience and understanding of the UK rail communication and signalling network.
  • Competent user of Microsoft Office software including Word, Teams and Excel.
  • A strong understanding of construction, installation and testing methods for electrical infrastructure.
  • Able to communicate technical detail clearly and to a high standard in verbal, written, sketched and drawn forms of communication, including presentation skills.
  • Able to build and maintain strong working relationships with client engineers, project managers and other discipline CRE’s.
  • Experience at managing electrical design processes within a team and via sub-contractors.
  • Promote a culture of safe working practices, safe by design and high standards of Health, Safety and Environmental impacts in the business.
  • Experienced with ISO and Network Rail Standards.

Desired Education Requirements:

  • CG 2382 BS7671 18th edition.
  • Appropriate Degree BEng / BSc or equivalent qualification.
  • Member of the IET.
  • Working towards Chartered or Incorporated Engineer with the IET or similar.
  • Sentinel personal Track Safety PTS Cardholder.
