Assistant Engineer
Location: Crawley, West SussexAbout the Contract
On behalf of Network Rail, our 100-strong team of engineers undertake the assessment of a wide range of different railway structures across the UK. We manage and deliver the full assessment process, from the initial inspection for assessment on site, undertaking finite element modelling and producing calculations to determine the load capacity of the structure, through to reporting and making future maintenance and strengthening recommendations to our clients.
We are focused on innovation and are working with our clients to improve our delivery, the safety of our teams and the quality of the data we capture on site during our inspections by the use of technology such as 3D laser scanning, 360° cameras and drones. Our assessors use a range of design tools to ensure we deliver consistent results to our clients, including 3D CAD, SuperStress and Finite Element modelling systems such as STAAD Pro.
What is the purpose of this role?
To fulfil the duties of an Assistant Civil Engineer in the CAFA team for the assessment of rail structures, to:
- Deliver the specified assessments tasks on time, within budget and to Network Rail, Highway and other relevant standards.
- Provide support to Project Team.
- Aim to ensure compliance with Company and Network Rail management process and systems.
- Aim to ensure the highest standards of safety.

The core works cover rail structures assessments for underbridges, overbridges, footbridges, canopies, depots, undercrofts, tunnels and other structures to fully meet the client specification in accordance with relevant standards. Aspects of your role could involve;
- Preparation of technical assessment/design remits, calculations, reports and drawings, which are technically sound engineering solutions, complying with all relevant technical standards and client requirements.
- Preparation for and undertaking of site work to carry out inspection for assessments and inspection/examination of assets, where required.
- Comply with technical standards, consistent with the project Technical Specification and in accordance with the requirements of the Amey Integrated Management System including Health & Safety, Environmental and all other appropriate regulations relevant standards and HSEQ documentation.
- Maintaining knowledge of industry best practice and where appropriate applying best practice and independent engineering judgement within the team environment.
- Assisting and mentoring of less experienced or junior staff in the production of technical drawings, reports, calculations and provision of feedback as appropriate.
- Maintain health, safety and environmental compliance requirements, including the CDM Regulations.
- Support the project team in the preparation of cost estimates and subsequent successful delivery of commissions to programme, within budget and to the client’s requirements.
What are we looking for?
- Bachelors or Masters degree in an appropriate subject to satisfy the entry requirements for: CEng / IEng through ICE, CIHT or IStructE).
- Part way through the necessary training requirements for Chartered Professional Review of Incorporated Professional Review.
- Computer literate and conversant with MS Office suite and relevant engineering software packages.
- Has the appropriate technical skills and ability to successfully work within technical teams with high levels of quality.
- Good communication skills, with the ability to successfully work within teams undertaking internal and external discussions with local clients and other stakeholders.
