We are looking for individuals who hold experience in bridge design, inspection, assessment and refurbishment schemes, to join us here at AECOM.
We hold an established track record of successfully delivering bridge engineering schemes for over 75 years.
The bridges team are responsible for providing assessment, concept, feasibility, preliminary and detailed designs on a wide range of schemes, either as standalone bridge commissions or as part of multidisciplinary major projects.
AECOM has a wide range of clients are from the private and public sector and include long term Framework Agreements with numerous Local Authorities together with Design and Build commissions for many major Contractors.

Current projects include a major 5 year framework to inspect and assess rail structures in the UK.
In addition to this significant long-term commissions on bridge assessment and inspection, principally in the rail environment, our initial assessment often leads to the requirement for the design of bridge refurbishment, strengthening or replacement. We have also recently designed a new footbridge across the River Ouse in York which is an important link in the city council’s plans to improve pedestrian links across the city. We also carry out design, inspection and assessment work for local authorities and design of new and refurbished bridge schemes for contractors. Our portfolio of work includes specialist refurbishment of long span bridges both in the UK and abroad.
Minimum Requirements
We would like to hear from candidates who are able to offer experience and proficiency in two or more of the key areas;
- Experience with bridge inspection, assessment and design schemes.
- Extensive experience in road and/or rail projects in the UK.
- Exposure with clients including: national and local authorities and/or Network Rail and ideally Principal Contractors.
- Strong understanding of Health and Safety responsibilities including compliance with CDM legislation.
- You will have a current clean driving license and be willing to travel throughout the UK to visit sites.
- Strong ability in various software packages ideally including LUSAS and MIDAS, with strong experience in Finite Element Analysis preferred.
- Knowledge and experience of the following: Eurocode, British, Highways England and Network Rail Standards.
- Experience in delivering bridge design through Highways England and Network Rail standards.
Preferred Qualifications
- Degree educated or equivalent in a relevant subject such as Bridge, Civil or Structural Engineering.
- Ideally educated to MSc / MEng level or equivalent.
- Chartered Engineer with ICE or IStructE.
