EMC Engineer in Flexible, Select region, United Kingdom

JOB DESCRIPTION

Your role, though primarily technical, will be twofold. You will be involved in EMC assurance on railways, as well as non-railway related projects (e.g. transmission and generation) and be responsible for and/or support the preparation of EMC related assurance documents such as EMC Strategies and Control Plans. You will also take part in EMC HAZID workshops, preparing and managing EMC hazard records, be involved in modelling work (e.g. induced voltage studies, calculate magnetic fields, etc.) using our software tools and produce standalone EMC assessments to check the client requirements are met.You will also get involved in EMC site test measurements and other on-site activities (e.g. surveys).
Working closely with the EMC Team Leader, you will also provide support, as and when required, on people management matters such as work allocation, utilisation management, team communication and mentoring of more junior colleagues. You will also provide support to the EMC Team Leader on business development helping with the preparation of polished bids, determining scope of work, formulating methodology, deriving budget and programme for our EMC activities.

CANDIDATE SPECIFICATION

Ideally, the client would like you to have several of the skills below:

  • Be a Chartered Electrical Engineer or working toward Chartered status.
  • A good understanding of AC and DC traction power systems and their interfaces.
  • A sound understanding of the applicable UK regulatory framework for EMC (e.g. UK EMC Regulations 2006, supporting UK designated standards, etc.).
  • An understanding of DC and Low Frequency sources of interference (e.g. harmonics) and coupling mechanisms.
  • An understanding of DC stray current issues and their management and Physical Agents (EMF) Directive 2004/40/EC and the International Commission on Non-Ionizing Radiation Protection (ICNIRP) limits.
  • An understanding of earthing & bonding principles on AC and DC railways and their implications regarding electrical safety.
  • Preferably, an understanding of computer modelling techniques commonly applied to the analysis of traction power and associated EMC related issues.
  • A growth mindset and an ability to learn quickly on the job.
  • Good verbal and written communication skills in English.
  • Good interpersonal and organisational skills.

JOB PROFILE The very busy, award-winning EMC team is looking for an EMC Engineer with a flair for people management and business development to support the EMC Team Leader. This is a great opportunity for a person wanting to work towards team management.
You will be responsible for the delivery of EMC consultancy services to major rail clients such as Network Rail, Transport for London, etc. and ensure the projects are compliant with applicable Electromagnetic Compatibility regulations and standards.This involves working closely with the client from concept and design, right through to delivery, documenting and demonstrating EMC, calculating and modelling electromagnetic interference and also getting involved with specific testing to validate some requirements. The role requires regular interaction with the clients and project stakeholders.
