Fire Engineer in London, London, United Kingdom
Job Description
We are seeking a Fire Engineer to join a Railways division in our Clients Croydon office. You will be involved in developing fire strategies and appropriate fire safety designs, including the specification and design of fire protection systems for transport infrastructure. The fire engineering project roles continue throughout the project lifecycle, from initial concept design through to construction. Collaborating with clients and external stakeholders is a key part of the role through delivering presentations and you will also be involved in contributing in design team meetings to ensure designs follow the fire strategies that have been agreed upon.
You will join a well-developed team that includes a wide range of experience from Principal Fire Engineers to early career professionals. Passing on knowledge and developing team members is a fundamental part of our team culture to which this role will contribute.
The role will periodically require some travel and occasional overnight stays, and potentially short overseas assignments and secondments.
Candidate Specification
As a Fire Engineer, you have experience in producing written fire-related documentation for both internal and external stakeholders. You also have experience in performance-based fire engineering including means of escape, fire detection systems, fire suppression systems and fire/smoke modelling.
You will also be able to demonstrate the following:
First-class or post-graduate degree in Fire Engineering or similar
Member or close to becoming a member of the Institution of Fire Engineers or equivalent
Although not essential, ideally you have demonstrable fire engineering experience related to both tunnels and railways as well as knowledge of British and International standards related to tunnels and railways, such as BS9992, CD352, NFPA130 and NFPA502. Additionally, it would be highly desirable if you have obtained or are close to becoming a chartered fire engineer.
Job Profile
The Fire Engineering team develop holistic fire strategies from first principles for complex and non-typical infrastructure. They undertake performance-based designs, supported by fire and evacuation modelling and both risk and cost-benefit analysis as appropriate. They also develop new guidance and fire engineering tools, such as the widely used STEPS software for evacuation modelling.
An important part of the work focuses on fire safety, ventilation design and modelling studies for underground rail and metro systems and for road tunnels. Some of the rail projects include HS2, Crossrail, London Underground (e.g. Victoria Station Upgrade, Northern Line Extension, London Overground), Heathrow Rail and metro systems across the Globe; North America (Bay Area Rapid Transit Silicon Valley Extension, Vancouver Millennium Line Extension), Australasia (Sydney Metro, Auckland City Rail Link), and the Asia-Pacific region (Hong Kong Airport tunnels, Changi Airport). Some of our road tunnel projects include the refurbishment of Heathrow road tunnels, Blackwall Northbound Tunnel, and Area 4 tunnels Roundhill and Southwick.
