ROLE
This role is that of a Technical Investigation Engineer within the Technical Investigation Centre at Crewe. Duties will include carrying out technical investigations in order to determine why equipment or system failures have occurred. Guidance, where necessary, will be provided by a Lead Technical Investigator.
Primary functions of the role include :
Technical Investigation:
- Review of existing failure information
- Research of equipment specification, typical operation and characteristics
- Derivation of suitable tests
- Execution of tests (in workshop/laboratory or on site)
- Commissioning, liaison and management of other specialist services if required, e.g. joint investigations with manufacturers/suppliers, use of specialists including optical consultants, metallurgists etc.
- Analysis of results in context of operational environment and further test iterations if required
- Formation of draft conclusions and recommendations in light of the investigation findings
- Draft production of a detailed investigation reports
- Collaborating with other team members, where necessary providing assistance to others carrying out technical investigations
- Working safely within guidelines, legislation, standards and processes to ensure the safety of self and others
- Actively engaging with clients to establish and maintain relationships, uphold the section's reputation and where possible supporting efforts to win work
- Understanding investigation requirements, managing self to meet safety, quality, schedule and cost objectives
Essential Qualifications and Experience
- Technically minded/astute
- Some technical knowledge and personal interest centred in one or more of the subject areas applicable to the section's investigations:
- mechanical engineering
- material properties
- electrical/electronic engineering
- electromechanical engineering
- hydraulic systems
- optical systems
- computer based control systems
- railway engineering (Signalling, Permanent Way, OLE, Track etc.)
- Some knowledge and personal interest in practical testing
- Good communication skills including the ability to write draft technical reports
- Reasonable level of IT skills
