Materials Engineer

Location: London

The Materials Engineer is the focal point for the definition, control and management of the material used to construct the works. Ensure that all materials are accepted by CP, Client/Asset Owner in advance of being use. To follow the accepted material approval process making timely and accurate submissions. Ensure that concrete mixes perform as required and expected. Ensure that all data and relevant information related to building materials are properly collected, analysed, recorded and filed accordingly to the Project's Quality Control and Assurance requirements. Ensure an updated, streamlined and reliable flow of all materials-related information to and from Client, CP and the Designers, attending the relevant meetings, workgroups and committees. Provide technical advice and support on building materials issues to the CP staff and Tier 2 contractors; troubleshooting, procurement, testing. Key Responsibilities

  • Responsible for reviewing and approving material compliance.
  • Will report any issues to the Engineering Manager and will liaise with the construction staff as needed.
  • Quality Control and procurement paperwork: submittals, records, reports.
  • Develops a Materials Approval procedure, Materials Proposal Schedule (MPS) listing all proposed permanent works materials and products and indicating any variances from the specified materials.
  • Sprayed concrete (SCL): troubleshooting and mix design review on a day-to day basis, liaising with batching plant and SCL Tunnel Manager to see that the sprayed concrete always meets the requirements for pumpability, workability time, sprayability, early and long-time strength and durability.
  • Mixes for insitu concrete: troubleshooting and mix design review on a day-to day basis, liaising with site manager, to see that concrete always meets the requirements for placeability, workability time, maturity, early and long term strength, durability.
  • Supervision and coordination of laboratory works (site and external) and follow-up of all concrete quality and its components' test results and reports.
  • Test data gathering, analysing and reporting (day-to-day strengths' trends monitoring for early detection of problems, monitoring of aggregates' properties, core grading.)   • Significant working experience with concrete technology, materials selection and procurement, mix design, batching, transporting, placing, testing.
  • Working experience with concrete testing
  • Working experience with in-situ concrete
  • Updated knowledge of Standards and regulations
  • Working experience with sprayed concrete

  • Educated to HND - HNC level or equivalent in a construction or related discipline. A low educational level combined with extensive experience in a similar role would meet this requirement
  • Experience in the railway environment
