Principal Bridge Engineer in Birmingham, West Midlands, United Kingdom
We are currently recruiting for a Principal Bridge Engineer with experience in bridge assessment, design, and refurbishment schemes, to join our busy and expanding experienced Birmingham Bridges and Structures team.
Our Birmingham office has an established track record of successfully delivering bridge and other structures projects, throughout the UK. The team provides input to projects throughout the infrastructure lifecycle from feasibility to detailed stage designs for new assets to inspections, assessments, maintenance and refurbishment of existing assets; with a keen eye on sustainability as part of our delivery. The projects we deliver range from standalone bridge commissions, through frameworks for ongoing delivery to supporting other parts of AECOM’s business on major multidisciplinary projects. Our clients are many and varied from both the private and public sector and include the major custodians of the UK’s road and rail network, numerous local authorities, private developers and major Contractors.
Current projects include a major UK 5 year rail network infrastructure framework assessment contract, a major highway bypass, South Wales Trunk Road Framework, support to other local teams with the design and checking of new bridges, and assessment of some of the UK’s most complex existing structures.
As a Principal Engineer, reporting directly to the Birmingham Rail, Bridges and Structures Office Lead, you will provide regular support to the Associate Directors in the team and support the leadership including the following:

You will be responsible for leading in excellent health, safety and welfare culture in the team

You will be responsible for assisting the team with our commitment to equity, diversity and inclusion through training and leadership on increasing awareness and engagement.

You will support the team managing resource against projects and providing financial and resource forecasting.

Technically lead rail and/or road bridge and associated structures schemes through to detailed design for some of our most challenging projects.

Act as Project Manager on several projects

Supporting and mentoring with engineering tasks concerned with unique or controversial problems.

Improve the quality culture within the team, taking on a checking role on projects, as well as driving improvements in self-checking and in-team checking.

Provide Line Management to staff at various grades.

Responsible for reviewing and signing off Technical Approval documentation.

Hands on technical design guidance for road and/or rail structures.
-
Hands on assessment guidance for road and/or rail structures.
-
Excellent technical and communication skills; both verbal and written.

Pro-active client liaison.

Support of tenders including quality documentation, costing estimate, risk and involvement with legal reviews.

Mentoring graduate engineers on our approved ICE Training Scheme.
Minimum Requirements
-
You will have proven design and project management experience delivering to quality, time and budget.

Experience of leading project teams
-
Significant technical knowledge of bridges in road and/or rail projects.
-
Knowledge in design to current common standards.
-
Experience of Eurocodes, British Standards, DMRB and Network rail standards.

Working knowledge of AutoCad and Revit.
-
Working knowledge of structural analysis software.

Previous exposure with clients of both national and local authorities and major contractors.

Ability to manage staff and project Health and Safety responsibilities including compliance with CDM legislation.
Preferred Qualifications
-
Chartered Engineer with ICE or StructE.

Degree educated or equivalent in a relevant subject such as Bridge, Civil or Structural Engineering.
