Principal Control Systems Engineer in Croydon, London, United Kingdom

My client a leading contractor to the rail sector require a Principal Control Systems Engineer to join them on a permanent basis at their surrey location. This role has a strong emphasis on rail signalling and would suit an individual who has direct experience of leading a team.

Within this role you will work on railway signalling projects throughout the full project life cycle, working in partnership with a multi-skilled, multi-disciplinary team. Yours and the team's involvement starts from the early stages of bids and tenders, specification, system design, through to validation, testing, approvals, and installation, to on-going customer support.

You will manage a team of engineers from junior to senior level, guiding them through the implementation of projects to deliver a technical solution which meets the customer's needs and complies with industry specifications.

Your Responsibilities within the role

  • Manage the delivery of control systems engineering work-packages across several projects.
  • Allocation of team members to work packages for the preparation of engineering plans, specifications, and control system design to ensure these are delivered to time, quality, and cost
  • parameters.
  • Direct and carry out independent checking of control systems as required.
  • Provide management support and guidance to the Control Systems Engineers within the team on all aspects of control systems design within allocated projects.
  • Participate in the preparation of technical details, specifications, and tenders for Control Systems projects
  • Monitor the progress of works and ensure that the development, design, construction and testing requirements are met and effect remedial action when required.
  • Ensure that the technical and safety standards are maintained in all aspects of design work in order that successful project implementation and future reliability is achieved.
  • Evaluate the quality and technical accuracy of tenders and make recommendations to obtain the best available commercial award for the Company.
  • Maintain a continuous communication with contractors and customers in the development and implementation of projects to ensure a uniformity of purpose and common targets.
  • On allocated projects participate in the planning, programming, and monitoring of resources to meet time line requirements and targets.
  • Forecast resource requirements necessary for allocated projects in sufficient time to ensure that they can be provided.
  • Monitor and control budgets for allocated work packages.
  • Direct testing and commissioning of Control Systems as required.
  • Conduct regular performance appraisal of key staff and manage their performance.
  • Act as mentor to the engineering community and promote personal development via Continuous Professional Development and Personal Development Plans.
  • Ensure staff have the appropriate IRSE licences and Safety Certification.
  • Where appropriate act in the role of Contractors' Responsible Engineer as directed.


What Skills, Qualification and Experience do I need?

  • Degree, HND or HNC in Electrical/Electronic Engineering.
  • Membership of IRSE or other relevant Engineering Institution.
  • Proven experience in the design and implementation of Railway Control Systems.
  • Signalling system or Railway Control Systems data preparation and design experience.
  • Experience of running projects to a programme whilst being responsible for planning and forecasting progress.
  • Experience in managing a team of people covering multiple projects.
  • Excellent communication and presentation skills.
  • Excellent understanding of task, time, and people management skills.
  • Excellent leadership skills.
  • Excellent organisational skills to manage multiple demands and work packages.
  • Good customer and commercial awareness.
