My Client, a leading Global Tier 1 Contractor within the Rail sector is looking for a Principal Systems Engineer (Interlocking Products) to join their team due to recent project awards.
A Principal Systems Engineer leads the development, adaptation, introduction, sustaining and support of signalling interlocking products, software and processes in the UK market. This portfolio currently includes SSI, SMARTLOCK (2oo3 platform), Smart Gateway, SmartIO and MooN platform along with their associated processes. The role includes the capturing of requirements, product and tool development and/or adaptation for the UK market, product introduction (including supporting the Network Rail product acceptance process) and product support (project delivery and end customer support).
POSITION OVERVIEW
Lead the development, adaptation, introduction and systems delivery elements of SSI and SMARTLOCK systems (SML 400, MooN, Smart Gateway, SmartIO, Support System, Test Environment, Auto Testing) for signalling systems in the UK and Ireland.
Lead the development and / or improvement of tools and processes within the business including requirements capture, planning, specifications, design, implementation, testing and roll out. Assist in ensuring that tools and processes remain fit for purpose and enable continuous improvement of them by leading regular reviews and proactively suggesting and implementing improvements.
RESPONSIBILITIES
- Planning and delivery of project solutions ensuring focus on reliability, maintainability and safety principles.
- Ensure conformity of projects to systems standards, agreed system architecture, client standards and company procedures.
- Lead the development of new systems solutions.
- Support to safety assurance on the application CSM on allocated projects / products including the development of Generic and Specific Application Safety Cases.
- Liaise with other engineering groups on issues such as EMC compatibility.
- Work with the Systems Engineering Manager to establish matters of best practice.
- Provide systems input to tenders.
- Provide systems engineering consultancy to internal & external clients.
- Manage systems integration, project deliverables, associated sub-systems and validation of technical documentation in order to verify product and project compliance.
- Support the project in the field by providing second and third line product support to customers
- Manage product obsolescence issues
- Attendance at business and technical briefings.
- Undertake day to day management, annual appraisals and proactive development of allocated staff.
- Management of allocated development or project delivery work packages to quality, cost and delivery objectives.

Qualifications:
- MSc or BSc level education in an engineering related subject, preferably control systems / electrical engineering / systems engineering or equivalent.
Experience:
- Experience in team leadership.
- Good knowledge of client and systems standards and legislation.
- Knowledge of the UK railway safety approval processes.
- Good knowledge of systems engineering principles and good understanding of relevant systems and software tools and the aptitude to develop skills further.

- Corporate Member of an engineering institute
- Chartered Engineer or Incorporated Engineer
- IRSE Systems or Engineering Managers licence
Experience:
- Experience working in a railway systems engineering environment.
- Knowledge of traction and rolling stock and railway operations.
