Principal Traction Power Engineer in Birmingham, United Kingdom
My Client is currently looking for a Principal Traction Power Engineer to work out of Birmingham, as a Principal traction power engineer. In return you have the opportunity to develop your career and shape exciting projects, such as HS2, Crossrail 2, Northern Powerhouse, Midland Hub etc.
You will be responsible for providing technical input, on the issues described below, on major projects.
The work covers all areas of DC and AC traction power systems including issues associated with earthing and bonding of such systems and also including in AC/DC interface areas.
Part of your role is to work in the following subject matter area:
- Traction power systems design for AC and DC based rail systems
- Have knowledge of AC and DC traction power supplies including an understanding of major feeding and sectioning principles
- Have knowledge of AC and / or DC traction power protection studies
- Have the ability to coordinate DNO supply connections and substation interfaces at voltages up to 400kV
- Have the ability to carry out LV protection calculations in accordance with the requirements of BS7671 (IET 17th Edition Wiring Regulations)
- Be able to perform traction power substation layout design
- Have the ability to develop site layout plans, building layout plans and switchgear arrangements in a CAD environment
- Be experienced in providing on-site design support during the construction phase of traction power substations.
- Be experienced in site acceptance testing and commissioning of traction power substations
- Have knowledge of traction power earthing and bonding principles
- Have knowledge of other railway LV systems including station power supplies, station services, signalling power supplies, etc.
Essential academic, professional qualifications and experience:
Chartered Engineer or equivalent,
An appropriate degree (e.g. BEng in Electrical Engineering) or a HNC/HND in Electrical Engineering and a member of a relevant institution (e.g. IET).
Have the ability to communicate with clarity both verbally and in writing.
Extensive experience working for an engineering consultancy within the rail sector
Essential competencies / skills:
Substantial experience and be able to demonstrate the following:
Experience in traction power design throughout project lifecycles.
Detailed knowledge and experience of Network Rail design approval process at CRE level.
Technical design experience to carry out supervision and project management of staff.
Capable of producing and checking a wide variety of Traction power design details.
Have an understanding of system engineering concepts and safety management.
Be familiar with construction and installation methods.
Be proficient in project planning and costing.
Able to write and check reports and specifications.
Good communication and people skills.
Be willing to travel to other UK offices and overseas when required.
Proven track record in winning and undertaking fee-earning work.
A record of building of strong client relationships
Proven record of successfully managing the performance of teams and the development of staff in their careers
Excellent and effective written and oral communications skills and an ability to relate to others at all levels
Strong leadership skills
Is decisive, tolerant of ambiguity with high energy levels
Desirable Competencies / Skills:
Previous experience of programme performance including commercial, financial and technical delivery
