Purpose of the job
The SCL Shift Engineer is responsible for technical and engineering aspects of the tunnel construction, which will include SCL excavation and primary lining support, profile control of the SCL, quality assurance of the SCL lining and RC works.
The SCL Shift Engineer helps to create an efficient working environment, keeps production costs low, ensures the quality of the works meets the requirements and helps maintain employee morale.
Accountabilities / Key responsibilities
- Advise on the preparation of start of shift safety briefings and constantly monitor safety.
- Arrive to St Magnus House Offices 30mins before shift briefing time to meet the shift manager, read emails/RESS/briefings, prepare check-sheets for the shift and get ready into PPE. Then attend the shift briefing at the Whole Block Site Welfare area.
- Meet the previous shift engineer to receive a handover of information at the start of each shift either in the tunnel or in the site office (shift manager to specify where the handover is to be carried out depending on the works)
- Carry out any briefings as requested by the shift manager (ie toolbox talks, RAMS, shift briefings, RESS, incidents)
- Have a good understanding of the risk assessments and method statements (RAMS) and ensure works on site are carried out safely, as per the RAMS, with due regard to the protection of the workforce, public and the environment. If works are not being carried out correctly, stop works and alert the shift manager.
- Ensure all operatives are briefed on the method statement, RESS and applicable Work Plans. Implement and monitor compliance with RESS.
- Report all construction issues to the Sub-Agent/Shift Manager.
- Carry out inspections as required by the works Inspection and Test Plan (ITP) and complete the check sheets during the shift (paper format or on online depending on the works). Responsible for collating signatures from other parties (LU Inspectors, Senior Engineers etc) as per the ITP.
- Responsible for setting out the works on site.
- Responsible for carrying out Tunnel Profile Control using the Amberg system. Record profile checks as per the ITP
- At the end of shift, provide handover information to the shift manager at the end of shift for the oncoming shift. Then meet the oncoming shift engineer to carry out a thorough handover of information to allow continuous and efficient working on site.
- Complete a detailed shift report for each shift; logging all works completed, any issues during the shift, durations for each work activities. Shift report to be submitted to shift manager at the end of each shift.
- Prepare Short Notice Changes or Method Statements as requested by the Shift Managers/Sub Agents
- Manage effective use of materials and control of waste.
- Liaise with Tunnel Sub-Agent, SCL Inspectors and SCL Design Engineers. Escalate and issues, any incidents or near misses on site
- Be fully aware of the Tunnel Management Plan and follow the process described in this plan.
- Actively engage in the Health and Safety, Behavioural and Cultural programme ‘stand4safety’
- Lead by example, demonstrating high standards of health and safety, inter-personal behaviour and role model the ‘Bank Charter’ at all times
- Continually demonstrate collaborative, inclusive, cooperative and ‘problem solving’ values in all interactions (in person or electronically) with Bank Project’s client team, colleagues and suppliers
- Enable, and where necessary, coach direct reports to achieve high standards of Health and Safety, behavioural and cultural performance
- Freely discus Health and Safety, project issues, inter-personal behavioural differences and ensure transparency of decision making, actions and planning, as part of your daily responsibilities
- Intervene, when necessary, to avert, prevent or stop unsafe conditions or acts and ensure appropriate management action is taken to prevent future reoccurrence
- Display discerning judgement, leadership and where necessary, STOP WORK when unsafe situations occur
- Establish, encourage and maintain collaborative, cooperative and respectful relationships with Bank Project’s client team, colleagues and suppliers
- Proactively challenge safety, programme, commercial etc. decisions, then you believe then to not be in the project’s overall best interest, and share alternatives
- Recognise what went well, champion and promote those successes, and share any new learning with the wider team
Experience, knowledge, qualifications & training
- Have a good working knowledge of English, both written and verbal, and be able to report at management level.
- Previous SCL tunnelling experience, ideally including profile control of the tunnel lining.
- Educated to degree or higher level or equivalent in a numerate discipline, typically an Engineering discipline. A lower educational level, typically HNC or HND may be acceptable where a very significant level of experience in a senior technical engineering role can be demonstrated.
- Good understanding of site engineering and setting out practices.

- other relevant legislation
- Computer skills – Word, Excel, Outlook, Explorer
- Hold a CSCS Card.
