We are looking for an enthusiastic, confident and experienced Permanent Way Engineer to join Mott MacDonald’s Track team in our Manchester or York Offices. You will help us grow and develop the team to ensure that we:

  • Optimise our opportunity to secure and deliver track design works for multiple Projects
  • Have CRE level Engineers available to successfully represent Mott MacDonald on schemes
  • Provide technical mentoring and guidance to the Junior Engineers, Apprentices and Graduates for our teams in the UK

Reporting the Head of Track, your primary responsibility will be offering track design specific support to the successful delivery of multidisciplinary projects throughout their lifecycle, and providing scope and resourcing for tender proposals, acting as the lead track engineer.

The role is varied and will involve:

  • Leading Design Engineering activities based in our Manchester or York Office, providing technical support to existing Projects
  • Providing technical support and guidance to bidding teams to secure future works
  • Being able to undertake CRE level duties and technical lead support on Projects
  • Contributing to the successful performance of the existing track teams around the UK
  • Assisting teams in our European offices to deliver projects in the UK and globally as required
  • Undertaking line management responsibilities for professional engineers, graduates and/or apprentices

You will be expected to contribute to the development and maintenance of professional excellence within the track design unit, including the development and application of innovative technical solutions and improvements, bit also contribute to the wider business sector if required.

Whilst the role will be technically focussed, you should be able to demonstrate good understanding of commercial and programme implications for ensuring delivery of Projects on time and to budget and ideally have experience in managing small design teams to ensure successful delivery of Projects.

You will also be considered for line management responsibility for a small team of Engineers and will ensure that issues ranging from staff development and performance management, performance development reviews and staff welfare are managed. Academic, professional qualifications and experience:

• Ideally Chartered or equivalent, with an appropriate degree (e.g. BEng in Civil Engineering or Mechanical Engineering)
• Ideally have membership of a relevant institution (e.g. PWI, IET, IMECHE, IEHF or INCOSE).
• Demonstrated experience working for an engineering consultancy within the rail sector, ideally within the UK
• CRE level experience demonstrated on one of more existing or historical Projects
• Must have worked on at least one multi-disciplinary, Major Project, and demonstrate a core understanding of interface management
Essential competencies / skills:
• Focus on Safety and Safe by Design
• Highly proficient at Track Alignment Design
• Proficient with Bentley Rail Track and Microstation packages
• Proficient at S&C Design and specification including complex layouts
• To be able to undertake the role of Checker for others works
• Demonstrate a rounded track design experience covering a wide range of interfaces, e.g. formation design, interface with structures, stressing design, drainage design etc
• Demonstrate a solid understanding of Railway Group Standards and UK Company Specific Standards, e.g Network Rail/LUL including Project assurance requirements
• Able to scope and manage gauging survey and analysis from ClearRoute
• Understanding of responsibilities of CDM, CSM-RA and associated risk management systems

Aspirational Competencies/Skills:

• Sentinel Card Holder (PTS AC/DC)
• Experience of line management of Junior Staff
• Project Management experience
• Hold or have held, stressing levels 1, 2 & 3
• Hold or have held other track specific competencies, e.g. Speed Raising
• Competence in Track-ex, Vampire modelling or other whole life costing assessment tools
• Have worked on one or more non-UK Project
• Understand Construction and Maintenance interfaces and requirements
