We are currently seeking a Senior Systems Engineer to join our Infrastructure Systems Team in London to work with multidisciplinary teams delivering a portfolio of exciting, varied rail projects as part of an established and expanding consultancy

You will be part of a team responsible for the successful delivery of our design commissions for major clients including Network Rail, HS2 Ltd, London Underground, Contractors (in a design and build context) Suppliers and other agencies such as Train Operators, Councils, Passenger Transport Executives and academic institutions.

As a senior member of the Infrastructure Systems Team, you will provide support and advice to teams across Arup on all rail system and system engineering issues. This can range from leading the requirements management and assurance through detailed system design and system modelling to hazard analysis and dependability analysis.

Current multidisciplinary projects include HS2, Crossrail, Luton Airport Automated People Mover, and Meridian Water Station Development.

The position offers scope for personal skill development, especially in relation to increasing of Systems Engineering expertise within a Rail environment and mentoring more junior members of the team. The focus will be on developing existing skills and experience and sharing this experience with other team members, in a stimulating and challenging project environment, and so enhancing Arup’s overall systems engineering and rail capability.

Role

We are looking for a Systems Engineer with technical knowledge covering systems and ideally strong infrastructure engineering experience to be an integral part of our London Infrastructure Systems team.

Ensure the successful delivery of systems engineering aspects of technically excellent multidisciplinary rail projects and bids across our UK Rail portfolio.

Typical activities will include:

• Producing System Engineering plans and setting up and implementing of typical Systems Engineering processes: e.g. requirements management, Interface management, systems integration, assurance, verification and validation, engineering safety, EMC and RAMS
• Leading or undertaking system engineering activities for feasibility, concept and detailed design of rail projects
• Advising teams in their adherence to those System Engineering processes
• Developing appropriate budgetary and planning responsibility for those activities for which you are responsible
• Assisting in the development of system and software models
• Mentoring, supervising and checking the output of more junior systems engineers on projects
• Preparation of bids and tenders to help win work for the Firm

Essential Skills and Knowledge:

• Familiarity with the rail domain, its systems and disciplines
• Able to demonstrate ability and experience in specifying, designing or approving within their own engineering discipline e.g. train control, traffic management, rolling stock, rail telecoms, customer information systems, traction power or RAMS etc.
• Experience in design on rail projects and of Network Rail’s or London Underground project lifecycles
• Experience with engineering safety management practice e.g. Common Safety Method, Yellow Book or equivalent
• Able to explain modern systems engineering techniques and processes to engineers and managers
• Experience with rail projects and their modern design lifecycles

Desirable Skills and Knowledge

• Experience with RAM analysis and railway performance modelling (including power modelling)
• Experience of requirements management tools such as DOORS
• Experience of MBSE tools

Qualifications:

• A university engineering degree in electrical, electronic or information systems or similar
• Ideally Chartered Engineer status or working towards CEng registration
