Structures Engineer – Rolling Stock
Purpose of the Job
To undertake and advise on structural calculations and analyses as required on behalf of the Engineering Department. To provide a quality, timely and cost-effective service to the customers and manage other stress engineers when required. To develop and introduce new tools and methods (e.g FEA)
This role can be based in Preston or Wolverhampton
Accountabilities
• To create structural calculations/analyses as required.
• To maintain a register of calculations on behalf of the department.
• To be the focal point for all TLS structural related work and to ensure all facets of Engineering structural requirements are adequately addressed in order to fulfil the Customer’s needs.
• To be responsible for structures project expenditure, resource utilisation and completion to timescale and cost.
• To be responsible for the delivery and quality of own and the work of other structural engineers.
• Correct development and management of the tools, software and methods in the group.
• Act as a TCA (Technically Competent Authority) and appoint TCE’s (Technically Competent Engineer) as required.
• To survey and assess the condition of vehicle and component structures.
• To develop structural repairs for vehicles and components.
• To ensure structures related project milestones are established and attained.
• To ensure Engineering structures interfacing with other functions throughout the Project.
• To direct the overall Engineering structures approach to the Design and installation.
• To provide adequate structural reports as required.
• To ensure items that can be regarded as safety critical have an appropriate structural assessment.
• To check and approve calculations and studies in accordance with departmental/company procedures.
• To interpret structural standards and preparation of specifications.
• To train and monitor other engineers as required.
• To support the recruitment of the right quality of staff as required.
• To chair/support Design For Quality processes e.g design reviews/Return Of Experience.
• To represent engineering on professional bodies, working groups, Core Competence Networks etc.
• To prepare work plans, task lists as appropriate for self and team members when necessary.
• To carry out appraisals and advise manager on salary, promotion and development needs as required
Experience
• Experience in structural analysis essential
• Experience in structural design essential
• Finite element analysis FEA skills essential (ANSYS Essentials) Hyperworks Desirable
• Experience in railway engineering desirable.
• Mechanical Engineer Degree (HNC/D)
