Traction Power Engineer in Croydon, London, United Kingdom, London, United Kingdom
The Traction Power group undertakes projects of various sizes, many of which are multi-disciplinary.
You will be based in the Croydon office. Depending on project requirements, there may also be a need to travel to other locations (company or client, office or site) within the UK and overseas.
You will be responsible for providing technical input, on the issues described below, on major projects which my client is undertaking. The work covers all areas of DC and AC traction power systems including issues associated with earthing and bonding of such systems and also including in AC/DC interface areas.
Part of your role is to work in the following subject matter area, under the supervision of senior staff:
You need experience in:
- Traction power systems design for AC and DC based rail systems
- Have appreciation level knowledge of AC and DC traction power supplies including an understanding of major feeding and sectioning principles
- Have appreciation level knowledge of AC and/or DC traction power protection studies
- Have the ability to coordinate DNO supply connections and substation interfaces at voltages up to 132kV
- Have the ability to carry out LV protection calculations in accordance with the requirements of BS7671 (IET 17th Edition Wiring Regulations).
- Have the ability to perform traction power substation layout design
- Have the ability to develop site layout plans, building layout plans and switchgear arrangements in a CAD environment.
- Be familiar with the use of static frequency converter (SFC) technology in terms of layout and interfaces with DNOs and traction power substations
- Be experienced in providing on-site design support during the construction phase of traction power substations
- Be experienced in site acceptance testing and commissioning of traction power substations
- Have appreciation level knowledge of traction power earthing and bonding principles
- Have appreciation level knowledge of other railway LV systems including station power supplies, station services, signalling power supplies, etc.
The role is based in Croydon but as we work for most of the major UK infrastructure owners visits at short notice are usual. Overseas they have live projects in North America and Australia so you will need to be flexible and willing to travel abroad for short visits of a week or so.
It is essential you have the following academic, professional qualifications and experience:
Minimum HNC/HND in Electrical Engineering or relevant subject.
Solid experience in a Railway design and build or consultancy business
An Incorporated Engineer (IEng) or working towards Incorporated Engineer status
Familiar with Microstation CAD environments
Familiar with EDMS environments such as Projectwise
Essential competencies / skills would include:

Ability to utilise Excel, Mathcad or similar packages for complex studies and calculations.
Desirable academic, professional qualifications and experience:
First Degree in Electrical Engineering or relevant subject.
Extensive experience in traction power engineering within a Railway design and build or consultancy business
A Chartered engineer (CEng) or working towards Chartership
Trained in both Microstation and Autocad CAD environments
Desired competencies / skills:
As per Job Description above but with the following IT Skills:
1) Ability to develop LV protection studies in Amtech, HevaComp or equivalent software
2) Ability to develop HV protection studies in ETAP or equivalent software
