General Description:
To ensure that the welding and structural engineering aspects of rolling stock projects are successfully specified, validated, and delivered and comply with Railway Group Standards. Oversee all welding activities to ensure quality and design standards are adhered to.
Responsibilities:
- Visit potential customers’ sites to view damaged railway vehicles and assess scopes of work for Incident Repair Department
- Assist Project Manager in the preparation of cost and timescale plans for any reengineering project.
- Generate work instructions and repair procedures for the workshop and VAB authority to document repairs to railway vehicles.
- Generate weld procedures for specific welding processes to accompany repair procedures.
- Arrange and liaise with subcontract laboratories for the inspection of specific weld test bars.
- Control and Maintain Welder Training and Approval records.
- Perform the inspection of welds through Visual, Magnetic Particle and Dye Penetrant methods.
- Oversee and support the inspection of PCN level 1 qualified inspectors.
- Oversee welding undertaken and advise technical solutions and best practise.
- Ensure the risk associated with the mechanical and structural changes and repairs to rolling stock are understood, documented, and managed.
- Ensure design changes and repairs relating to welding comply with appropriate Railway Group Standards.
- Support the Production, Design and Structural engineering teams with appropriate welding methods, and drawing symbology for a range of applications for both steel and Aluminium constructions.
- On project completion ensure that the Structural & Welding element of the “vehicle history book” is accurate, signed and that the content reflects the work undertaken, prior to customer handover.
Education Requirements
- PCN Level 1 (Level 2 desirable) in Visual Inspection, Magnetic Particle Inspection and Dye penetrant Inspection.
- PCN Level 1 /Level 2 in Ultrasonic testing (desirable).
- Detailed knowledge of railway vehicle structural designs and build.
- Must be prepared to pass a PTS course
- HND qualified in a relevant welding discipline
- Minimum 5 years practical welding experience (In Rail or aerospace industry preferably).
