We are looking for a Permanent Way CRE to support the large and expanding programme of works for the South Rail Systems Alliance (SRSA) on our current and forthcoming Anglia and Southern sites.
This role can be based out of any of our UK rail offices in the UK.
The role will require experience and knowledge of Switch and Crossing (S&C) single option and detailed design, and also include acting as the Lead Designer or as the Contractor’s Responsible Engineer (CRE).
The emphasis of these roles will be on the successful delivery of projects to appropriate quality standards, achieving excellence in technical and design quality ensuring the Track design contributes to an integrated multi-discipline engineering design.
The role will also be required to enhance the team’s portfolio of skills and expertise, supporting the Technical Head of Track and the project Contractor’s Engineering Manager (CEM) in running SRSA projects, and mentoring less experienced team members.
The Team and Projects
Along with the large rail infrastructure projects undertaken by AECOM, the Permanent Way team deliver track design solutions for the South Rail Systems Alliance Programme. The Alliance title reflects the multi-disciplinary design and construction activities undertaken collaboratively between AECOM, Network Rail and Colas Rail.
The SRSA is progressively becoming the team of choice in the South with an increase in requests to support other projects, for example Enhancement projects and Works Delivery projects. Hence, there is a variety of projects this role can be involved with on top of the core S&C renewals.
Specific tasks for the role:
- Production of track designs and provision of technical support throughout the Approval In Principle, Detailed Design and Approved For Construction stages of the design;
- Manage a team of allocated designers for the production of track design deliverables in accordance with Client Requirements;
- Specify survey scopes – it is encouraged that the CRE and Lead Designer undertake a site visit to familiarise themselves with their site(s);
- Available as a Checker resource for SRSA;
- Monitor your allocated design resource and design programme, working closely with the CEM and Project Manager to deliver to schedule;
- Attendance at technical design reviews including Design and Construction Interface meetings and Interdisciplinary Design Checks to present the Track design;
- Keep up to date with industry best practice, share and apply appropriate lessons learnt, innovative techniques and best practise within the SRSA and AECOM Track teams.
Specific Skills Required for the role:
- Demonstrable experience in the application of track design principles
- Demonstrable competence in the design (concept and detail) of S&C, especially within the Network Rail Infrastructure environment
- Competent user of Bentley™ RailTrack Design package and Microstation CAD package
- Competent user or good working knowledge of ClearRoute 2™ software for kinematic gauging
- Familiar with Track-ex tool for
- Knowledge of track maintenance practices and construction methodologies and the ability to consider/define requirements within design development
- Knowledge of system interfaces which impact on track design principles and demonstrable experience if the successful management of interfaces within design experience
- Excellent communication skills, ability to develop and deliver presentations, preparation of technical reports and knowledge about project management
- Gathers and correlates basic engineering data using established and well-defined procedures
- Works on detailed or routine engineering assignments involving calculations and relatively simple tests.
- Proposes approach to solve new problems encountered
- Provides guidance to entry level engineers
Minimum Requirements:
- Have relevant knowledge and experience in the Network Rail role of Contractor's Responsible Engineer
- Demonstrable experience and understanding of railway infrastructure and track throughout the engineering process from project inception to delivery
- Have leadership experience of the development and implementation of engineering solutions
- Computer literate and conversant with MS Office suite and relevant engineering software packages (Bentley™ RailTrack™, Microstation™, ClearRoute2)
- Good communication skills and the ability to work within a collaborative environment, whilst having a dedicated approach to working within and meeting strict project deadlines
- Good communication skills when dealing with Clients, Stakeholders and Alliance partners
- Client focused approach to service delivery
Preferred Qualifications:
- Chartered or Incorporated Engineer (CEng / IEng) or demonstrable evidence of progression to professional accreditation. Support will be given where necessary.
- Recognised engineering qualification or preferably a degree in Engineering
