Train Fitter – Interiors

Location: South London
Pay: £20.66 PAYE; £26.88 Umbrella per hour
Shifts: Sunday to Thursday, Permanent Night shift

Are you looking for a hands-on position where you can grow your competencies in the rail sector?

If you take pride in your work and want to see the results of your craftsmanship every day, this role gives you exactly that.

As a Train Fitter specialising in interiors, your skills will directly shape the comfort, safety, and experience of thousands of passengers. Every seat you repair, every fixture you maintain, every detail you perfect, it all adds up to a train environment that passengers feel proud to travel in.

The role:

Your role will be hands-on, varied, and rewarding and it would include:

  • Repairing and maintaining train interiors, from panel and paint repairs to seat covers, glazing, window films, armrests, tabletops, and toilet fittings.
  • Ensuring tools and equipment are prepared, maintained, and safe to use, reporting any issues quickly to keep productivity high.
  • Managing materials and parts effectively, keeping track of stock and flagging shortages.
  • Keeping accurate records of your work, whether on paper or electronically, so the maintenance story of each train is crystal clear.
  • Working closely with your team, sharing ideas and communicating effectively to get the job done right, first time.
  • Adapting to challenges, whether that’s a sudden fault, a schedule change, or an unexpected issue, and solving it with professionalism.
  • Putting safety first at every step, spotting hazards and ensuring a safe environment for you, your team, and future passengers.

Here’s what you can look forward to:

  • Visible impact: You’ll see the difference you’ve made every time a train leaves the depot, with interiors that meet the highest standards.
  • Skill development: Your mechanical expertise will grow through varied tasks and continuous training opportunities.
  • Career progression: The rail sector offers long-term stability and multiple career paths — this role is a strong stepping-stone for future opportunities.
  • Upskilling – We are looking for individuals who would be open to further on the job training to expand their skill set, planned training includes PTS (personal track safety) and basic electrical installation.
  • Team environment: Work alongside professionals who take pride in their work, support each other, and are committed to delivering excellence.
  • Night shift premium: With shifts running Sunday to Thursday nights, from 8pm to 5am, you’ll benefit from great pay rates and a work-life balance that leaves your weekends free.
  • Pride in purpose: Be part of an industry that’s vital to the UK, where your contribution helps shape greener, more efficient transport for the future.

What would help you thrive in this role:

Strong hands-on mechanical assembly skills and an interest in hands-on work, experience in fitting or maintenance is a real advantage.

A proactive, adaptable approach with a focus on safety and teamwork.

A PTS qualification is ideal, but not essential, support and guidance can be provided to help you get there.

The ability to pass a rail-standard medical and Drug & Alcohol test (essential for safety in the industry).
