Role Definition:
This role is for a Lead Systems Engineer, capable of technically leading and supporting the System Engineering tasks on the various ETCS On-board projects. The Lead Systems Engineer will play a lead role in Customer Requirements Management, management of the technical design risk, the definition of the System and Sub-system Design, and subsequent production of detailed Product Requirements for Project Teams to implement.
The Lead Systems Engineer role will also involve the management of the technical interfaces between the Siemens ETCS system, the Train Design Authority and the internal and external Design Teams ensuring that the technical solutions meet the operational and performance requirements.
The jobholder will be capable of building and maintain strong communication links with Global R&D, the Project Delivery Teams, the Train Design Authority, the Siemens design, fitment and approval partners and the client, and will be capable of interpreting and influencing their delivery strategy based on the needs of these stakeholders.
Success in the role will be measured primarily by the on-time delivery of allocated tasks meeting quality and budget targets as agreed with the Senior Systems Integration and Design Manager. The Lead Systems Engineer will be expected to plan their own work within their overall agreed targets.
This role will help play a major part in delivering the ETCS on-board systems necessary as the business demands. The role will focus on all parts of the lifecycle activities of the System Engineering process for all ETCS on-board projects.
Key Accountabilities:
- Will work closely with colleagues in the bids & tendering team, the engineering team members in the UK and Germany, project groups, the lines of business and heads of technology throughout Siemens, to ensure that the project systems solutions meet our customers’ needs now, and in the future.
- Will work closely with the on-board train fitment design team to ensure all project related system constraints are understood and implemented accordingly.
- Provide key input and ideas to help determine the most appropriate technical, product and commercial solutions within the given geographical and technical environment.
- Ensure innovation and value engineering is applied to all proposals.
- A key player within the project organisation.
Specific Skills/Tasks:
The Lead Systems Engineer will be expected to provide technical leadership for their allocated tasks, particularly in the earlier lifecycle activities of the allocated project.
- Customer Requirements Elicitation, Capture and Analysis
- System Requirements Elicitation and Specification
- System Design Analysis and Specification
- Product Requirements Specification
- Management of Interface Risk
- Technical Management of the Train Design Authority & internal and external Design teams to achieve coherent design solutions
- Ownership of all Technical Interfaces, Product Design Analysis and Specification
- Integration of component subsystems into a single system
- Analysing and advising on competing technical solutions
- Working within a Configuration Control system (including raising and applying Change Requests etc.)
- Providing estimations for system engineering activities, Progress reporting
- The candidate will also be expected to maintain an appreciation of new technologies and their application to support ongoing deliveries
- Demonstrates customer focus in all work carried out.
- Experience of working to industry quality and safety standards.
- Strong and effective communicator at all levels within the business and in front of new and existing customers.

What do I need to qualify for this job?
- Educated to degree level (or equivalent experience) in an engineering, scientific or numerate discipline
- Proven track record and experience of working within the rail sector
- Experience in providing technical leadership in demanding safety critical environments
- Knowledge of the systems engineering life cycle, cost awareness and awareness of processes involved in other engineering disciplines
- Able to contribute to continuous process
- Experience of working to industry quality and safety standards
- A demonstrable broad experience of railway technologies and their application
- Experience in mentoring engineers working in a safety critical development environment
- Understanding and practical experience of applying ETCS standards
