Senior Estimator in Doncaster, South Yorkshire, United Kingdom
My Client, a Leading Tier 1 Contractor within the Rail sector are currently looking for a Senior Estimator, to be part of their Work Winning team based in Doncaster. Reporting to the Head of Estimating, you will be responsible for estimating values of up to £50m.
The successful candidate will have 5 years experience first principles estimating in the rail infrastructure or Civil's sector, have experience working as part of a BID team, and familiar with CANDY software, or similar software packages.
Your responsibilities will include:
- Be aware of the pertinent issues within the ITT and Terms and Conditions. Ensure that all requirements are reflected in the preparation and presentation of the pricing elements of the tender submission to optimise the clients commercial position.
- Be familiar with the various methods of measurement, and understand how to apply these to cost estimates.
- Have an understanding of discipline interfaces and ensure that the scope split priced is accurate with no gaps / overlaps.
- Undertake detailed take-offs from technical information.
- Work with production staff to establish methodology, programme, resource requirements etc. Where necessary produce own programmes to assist in establishing resource requirements.
- Supported by other members of the bid team, lead the identification of s/con packages and commodities enquiries, and preparation of ITTs which address all of the relevant criteria in order to obtain compliant competitive quotations. Be the point of contact for sub-contractors during their tender preparation and undertake analysis of tender returns. This includes seeking further clarification or amendments to quotes if required.
- Be proactive in interrogating and challenging operational and procurement data.
- Take part in the relevant risk review meetings, contribute to assessing project risks, the proposed mitigations and associated costings for incorporation into the final tender submission when required. Have an understanding of how the contract affects the way risk is provided for and ensuring that this is addressed in the cost estimate.
- Produce estimates from first principal of lowest feasible prime cost in accordance with relevant procedures, ITT documents, tender deadlines and information provided by members of bid team. This may include production of: bills of quantities; activity schedules; schedules of rates; dayworks; etc.
- Undertake benchmarking exercise against previous similar estimates or actual costs in order to demonstrate accuracy of price.
- Provide analysis and reports as required during the tender phase.
- Provide input into bid to generate commercial and operational advantages.
- Responsible for chairing estimating meetings with planners and estimators from other disciplines / companies.
- Prepare and present estimate to senior staff and clients in a clear, methodical and professional manner.
- Produce necessary information for tender settlement and handover meetings. Lead the presentation of the cost estimate. Ensure that all information requested as part of the handover is provided.
- Responsible for all cost estimate related issues during post tender negotiations.
- Keep abreast of operating/installation methods adopted on site, and the resources required in same, through visits to site and discussions with management.
- Undertake peer reviews of other team member's estimates, as required.
- Contribute to best practice being maintained throughout estimating function, and contribute to instigating / advising change to procedures.
- Contribute to the development of junior staff to support their professional development as agreed with the Head of Estimating.
- As part of complying with the IMS, ensure that you fully understand and adhere to the requirements of the pre-contract manual, and comply with all said requirements.
- Work on own initiative and manage own time.
- Bring innovation into the department for continued improved performance.
- Operate within the practice and procedures of the quality system.
