Senior Network Architect / Senior Network Design Engineer
This role is for a Senior Network Architect and team lead, capable of technically leading and defining operational telecommunication designs and solution for various railway projects. The role will involve delivering IP based backbone communications systems and operational voice system solutions for projects and bids based on customer requirements.
The job holder will provide team leadership to a team network architects and entry level talents and will be contribute to their career development and progression.
The jobholder will be capable of building and maintaining strong communication links with the customers' telecoms specialists and delivery partners and collaborate with the systems engineering group, the project delivery teams and research and development team, and management team to interpret and influence the delivery strategy, based on the needs of these stakeholders.
Success in the role will be measured primarily by the on-time within budget delivery of allocated tasks as agreed with the Network Design Manager and the Project and customer sign off of all design deliverables.
This role will help play a major part in delivering communications, control and information systems necessary as the business demands.
The Jobholder will play a key role in a fast-growing network department and evolving industry.
What are my responsibilities?
The Senior Network Design Engineer and Team Lead will be expected to provide technical leadership for their allocated tasks and manage a small team of network architects and entry level talents. The role includes the following responsibilities:
- Development of data and voice solutions and proposals for bids to secure business opportunities.
- Production or approval of IP based backbone communications systems designs including architectural diagrams, description documents, low level network design, IP Addressing/Subnetting design and configuration
- Production or approval of VoIP system design packs: architecture diagrams, high level design documentations, low-level design documentations, numbering plans, user requirement specification and configuration
- Production or approval of network security architecture and designs.
- Managing customer requirement and produce system requirements and proposals
- Development of bid and proposal including pricing and presentation of the solution to managers and customer.
- Presenting the network design architecture to the project and the customer.
- Development of associated test specifications
- Support for onsite build and test
- Support for integration and system testing
- Provide technical support and mentorship to team members.
- Ability to manage and lead a team of network engineers.
What do I need to qualify for this job?
Essentials:
- Graduate in relevant engineering discipline or other numerate subject or equivalent experience
- A demonstrable experience in design and implementation of Gigabit Ethernet IP based backbone communications systems and voice telephony systems.
- Proven experience of producing formally documented network designs and interface documents
- Proven knowledge and experience of configuration management and control practices
- Proven knowledge of the systems engineering life-cycle, cost awareness and awareness of processes involved in other engineering disciplines
- Proven experience of working to industry quality and safety standards
- Proven experience in delivering safe, secure and resilient operational telecommunications solution for industrial systems and mission critical applications.
- Strong interpersonal and leadership skills with the ability to communicate technical solutions at all levels.
- Able to work to tight timescales
- Significant experience of delivering MPLS based network.
- Significant experience of delivering next generation firewall solutions.
- Significant experience of delivering Unified communications and Voice over IP solution.
- Cisco certified, or at working level with proven experience, to CCNP Service Provider/Enterprise, CCNP Collaboration and CCNP Security.
Desirable:
- Chartered engineer
- IRSE License
- Software Defined Networking
- Security services: SIEM, Threat Intelligent, IAM.
- Data centre and virtualisation
- Experience in UK railway operational telecoms design, standards and delivery processes.
- Demonstrable knowledge of railway systems: SCADA, Signalling, Radio, M&E, Station Information and Security Systems, electronic security.
