About the contract

Amey undertake Structural Examinations, Structural Assessments, Operational Property Inspections, Earthworks Examinations, Technical Monitoring and provide Rapid Response services for Network Rail in several routes throughout the United Kingdom. Civil Examination Framework Agreement (CEFA) team includes over 200 Structures Examiners working on behalf of Network Rail to assess over 70,000 structures across the UK.

Amey has worked continuously with Network Rail delivering aspects of the CEFA contracts since 2009, taking responsibility for the asset management and examination of different assets during this time. Amey has always been committed to creating a sustainable future for the communities it operates in, through the design and delivery of services that are carbon positive, enhance biodiversity and use environmentally sustainable resources. Since 2009, on the CEFA contract, Amey has achieved a 58 per cent reduction in its normalised carbon footprint. This will be a continuing feature of the new contracts, and Amey will be collaborating with its stakeholders and supply chain to reduce lifecycle and value chain carbon.

What is the purpose of this role?

Perform all work within the CEFA contract, maximising efficiency and effectiveness and to ensure compliance with all relevant standards. All duties must be delivered safely and in accordance with the requirements of the client

What will this role involve?
  • Undertake the reviewing of examination reports (detailed, visual, additional, underwater/scour etc), including risk scoring and preparing recommendations for maintenance or renewal requirements. This requires a sound understanding of different material types, repair techniques and structural mechanics.
  • Checking that reports are compiled and submitted in accordance with client requirements, then reviewed and forwarded to Network Rail in accordance with the Technical Specification and contractual timescales.
  • Work as a part of the RSE (South) reviewing team across all 3 routes in the Southern Region (Kent, Sussex and Wessex).
  • Support the CEFA Technical Director and Regional Structures Engineer by striving to apply a consistent and unified approach to reviewing in line with the technical specification and in the application of risk scoring.
  • Prepare remits/drawings for intrusive and non-intrusive HCE examinations.
  • Monitor and review rejected reports from Network Rail. Prepare regular updates and attend review meetings when required.
  • Deputise as/when required for the Regional Structures Engineer.
  • Undertake the role as On-Call Duty Manager on a 1:8 rota. This is to provide engineering support to Examiners attending bridge strikes or following identification of a defect requiring urgent attention.
  • Undertake site observations/audits of completed reports as part of Engineering Assurance.
  • Undertake special investigations as directed by the Regional Structures Engineer.
  • Undertake technical briefings/ training/ technical assessments, as directed by the Regional Structures Engineer.
  • Undertake ‘Supervising Engineer’ duties for both STE2 and STE4 competencies, as directed by the Regional Structures Engineer.
What are we looking for?
    • Degree or HNC/HND in Civil or Structural Engineering.
    • Demonstrable industry experience in structures examination, maintenance, assessment and permanent way.
    • STE2 experienced reviewer.
    • Computer literate and conversant with MS Office suite and relevant engineering software packages.
    • Good communication skills and the ability to work within a small team and have a dedicated approach to working within and meeting strict deadlines.
    • Good communication skills dealing with clients, developers, consultants, elected representatives and the public
    • Client focused approach to service delivery.
    • The role will be London/Home-based, including flexible working.
