We are looking for a team of qualified and driven Platers/Fabricators.
You will support the operational teams to deliver parts within dimensional tolerances of drawings as well as carrying out welding & fabrication activities of our Rolling Stock Car Body fleet.
As a Plater/Fabricator we require extensive prior experience working in a similar fabrication and/or welding role. It is desirable that successful candidates have knowledge of assembling aluminium for welding, the ability to read and understand comprehensive engineering drawings as well as being able to support welding/fabrication activities including coding welding to relevant TIG or MIG standards.

Essential Requirements
- Strong prior fabrication and welding experience.
- Knowledge of assembling aluminium fabrication for welding.
- Reading a WPS for joint preparation details.
- Ability to read measuring equipment, tapes, telescopic measuring sticks etc.
- Able to perform a variety of welding / fabrication tasks including coded welding to relevant standards in TIG or MIG.
- An understanding of health and safety requirements of a working welding environment.
- Ability to work unsupervised - able to make decisive, informed decisions within the welding environment.
- Excellent dexterity and coordination as well as a high level of accuracy / excellent attention to detail.
- Good problem-solving skills and understanding of the importance to delivering to a schedule.
- A willingness to work flexibly and a positive approach to work and working patterns including shift work.
- Commitment to working as part of a team and have a Can do attitude to supporting both welding and working with other functions.
- Focusing on creating a high quality finished product.
- Being professional and responsible for work area.
- Strong interpersonal / communication skills at all levels.
- Ability to learn new skills to a high standard and train others by working closely with and support the Section Leader.
- Good numeracy and literacy skills.
- Willing to learn new job skills - Kaizen, 5S and participate in improvement activities
- Rigging and lifting qualifications.
- Abrasive wheels.
- Distortion control methods.
- Train the trainer qualification or relevant training experience.
Role responsibilities include
- Mark out and set up components and assemblies to the drawing requirements.
- Prep material where required for welding activities.
- Tack weld components into the finished assemblies.
- Competent in reading and understanding comprehensive engineering drawings, datum's and tolerances.
- Ensuring everything is assembled accurately to drawing instructions and tolerances.
- Working on Aluminium carbody and underframe assemblies.
- MIG tack welding between 3 - 70mm in all positions.
- Support the development of tools, jigs and fixtures to improve set-up efficiencies.
- Self-inspection of joint set-up.
- Operating cranes and lifting components in to jigs and fixtures.
- Problem-solving technical and production constraints with solutions.
You may also be asked to support Welding and fabrication of car bodies and sub-assemblies. To include but not limited to:
- Carrying out welding activities in accordance with WPS and SOPs.
- Working with limited supervision, making decisions based on analysis of work and applying welding skills.
- Carry out safe movement of car body panels.
- Preparation of weld surfaces in readiness for welding.
- Ensure that work is only carried out in accordance with coding / qualification to the correct specification.
- Carrying out weld repairs Full accountability for weld quality and ensuring self-checks are made to ensure work meets standard.
- Carry out weld finishing activities.
- Carry out pre and post weld inspections - inspects own pre/post weld work and has the responsibility to correct to the required standard. Problems encountered may not be routine /defined and need analysis to understand correct course of action.
