Job Purpose

As a graduate engineer you will undertake a mixture of training, development and project work, all of which will aid in your career progression and your journey towards Chartered Engineer status.
Your development plan will involve spending time working in each of our delivery teams to allow an appreciation and understanding of the yellow Rail business, in addition internal and external training will be provided to support development.

You will work on project work in all areas of the project lifecycle including the development of proposals and estimates, project plans, report writing, calculations, analysis and commercial aspects of projects.

The Role

• As a mechanical engineer you will apply your engineering knowledge and experience to technical problems to support the delivery of services to clients (external and internal).
• You will work on the design and development of rolling stock engineering design projects predominantly through the use of 2D and 3D CAD modelling and drawing using Solid Works CAD software.
• Provide engineering expertise as instructed by more experienced colleagues.
• Complete and develop your own competency workbook to develop your breadth and depth of competency and progress towards CEng status (with our support).
• Liaise with colleagues and contractors on project issues, and interface with clients on both technical and contractual matters as required and working on site as required.
• Assist in the management of projects as required, controlling budgets, quality and timeliness of deliverables and working with resource managers to utilise the right people.
• Develop proposals and eventually undertake business development activities to enhance client relationships and secure further work to achieve sales targets.
• Delivering specific engineering tasks and contributing to multi-disciplinary engineering projects.
• Build and maintain good relationships with colleagues, partners and clients, and contribute to marketing of company to potential customers.
• Observation of all company Quality, Health & Safety, Environmental commercial and project management disciplines and procedures, as relevant to tasks undertaken.

Personal Requirements

General requirements are for a graduate mechanical engineer with an enthusiasm and passion for railway rolling stock engineering.

Qualifications

• Masters Degree in Mechanical Engineering capable of achieving Chartered Status with the IMechE.

Knowledge/Experience

• Analytical and methodical problem solving.
• A visible passion for the rail industry and to learn and develop.
• Versatile and adaptable.
• Good communication skills at all levels, both in oral presentations and written reports.
• Flexibility to travel in the UK to Yellow Rail sites and client facilities.
• Experience in the use of software systems such as the MS Office suite and MS Project.
• Experience in the use of CAD software.
• Highly motivated, and able to work on own initiative.
• Ability to identify and articulate limits of personal knowledge.
• Committed to personal and professional development.
• Good team-working skills, particularly in relation to the delivery of multi-disciplinary projects.
