Job Purpose
Responsible for providing engineering expertise and support and the day-to-day management of engineering issues, to the Yellow Rail business product lines and clients.
Providing dedicated engineering design expertise to the Engineering Services product line to facilitate timely delivery of engineering services to clients.
Support the delivery of projects to time, quality and schedule.
The Role
• The role holder will be an experienced mechanical engineer and designer.
• As a mechanical engineer you will apply your engineering knowledge and experience to technical problems to support the delivery of services to clients (external and internal).
• As a design engineer you will undertake and deliver rolling stock engineering design projects predominantly through the use of 2D and 3D CAD modelling and drawing using Solid Works CAD software.
• Projects will include modification and refurbishment of existing rolling stock and the re-engineering of rolling stock equipment and components.
• Yellow Rail works on passenger and freight rolling stock and on-track machines for UK and international clients and markets.
• You will be required to work on your own initiative under the direction of the department manager to deliver services to our clients in accordance with timescale, quality and budgetary requirements.
Project Delivery
• Ensure that the projects allocated to you (or those that you are part of the project team) are managed to deliver their time, cost and quality objectives.
• Undertake regular project reviews to monitor overall project performance and provide robust forecasts on costs vs budget where required.
• Ensure all information, relevant to the projects that you manage and support, is shared within the business in a timely manner.
• Provide project engineering expertise to projects, ensure that all engineering aspects are in accordance with applicable standards and best practice.
• Carryout accurate and comprehensive vehicle surveys to allow concept and detailed design to be developed and/or a programme of works/modification instructions to be prepared.
• Take part in production planning meetings and provide engineering input and support through considered and professional decisions.
• Support First in Class installations on site and the introduction of new services and ensure a smooth transition to fleet production rates.
Personal Requirements
General requirements are for a mechanical engineer with a rail background, who can deal with customers and contractors in a commercial environment, having in-depth knowledge of engineering and rolling stock.
Qualifications
• Masters Degree in Mechanical Engineering ideally possessing or working towards Chartered Status.
• Membership of the IMechE.
Knowledge/Experience
• A working knowledge of railway rolling stock and rail stakeholders.
• 5 to 10 years engineering/rolling stock experience.
• Experience of working at a depot and/or rolling stock overhaul and maintenance facility.
• Experience of freight bogies is desirable.
• Rollingstock design (Required).
• 3D modelling
• 2D detail and production drawings
• Welding, fixings and fastenings

• Rollingstock design (Desirable).
• Electrical Schematics & Wiring diagrams
• Electrical installation design
• Cable and conduit installations
• Electrical train systems (PIS, CCTV etc.)
• Awareness of the assurance and approvals regimes applicable in the rail industry.
• Ability to understand, prepare and comment upon engineering instructions and drawings.
• Knowledge and understanding of vehicle maintenance and overhaul requirements.
