Principal Mechanical Engineer in Croydon, London, United Kingdom
Excellent opportunity to work with a team of genuine subject matter experts on projects across the world.
We have a new opportunity for a Mechanical Engineer to work alongside other senior tunnel ventilation engineers, the role will involve:
- developing ventilation strategies for tunnels and sub-surface metro systems;
- planning and leading simulation studies (we use both our own in-house 1D tunnel ventilation software and SES, plus CFX and FDS computational fluid dynamics software);
- planning and supervising engineering design work, from concept to detailed design stages;
- planning and supervising site-based work, such as airflow measurement exercises, periodic inspections, and testing & commissioning activities;
- ensuring that work is delivered to programme and budget;
- providing coaching and advice to junior staff, for example by demonstrating key engineering calculations;
- undertaking formal peer reviews of project work;
- liaising with project stakeholders and providing expert advice;
- developing relationships with key clients and supporting business development.
You will report to the Tunnel ventilation leader and be based in our clients Croydon office
Candidate Specification
Essential academic, professional qualifications and experience of the candidate:
Mechanical engineering degree, plus substantial work experience in tunnel ventilation.
Essential competencies/skills:
You will be able to demonstrate strong hands-on experience in planning and leading tunnel ventilation projects for underground metro systems and for rail, road, and utility tunnels, with the following specific competencies:
- developing ventilation strategies for tunnels and sub-surface metro systems;
- planning and leading simulation studies (using 1D tunnel ventilation software and 3D CFD software);
- planning and leading engineering design work, from concept to detailed design stages;
- planning and leading site-based work associated with tunnel ventilation systems.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
- Willingness to undertake short overseas trips (up to 1-2 weeks).
Desirable competencies/skills:
As a successful candidate, you will be a Chartered mechanical engineer or equivalent.
Desirable competencies/skills:
Working knowledge of:
- engineering design development within a BIM environment;
- controls and power supplies for tunnel ventilation systems;
- interface management in a multi-discipline design environment;
- installation, testing and commissioning of tunnel ventilation systems.
JOB PROFILE
An important part of the work focuses on fire safety, ventilation design, and modeling studies for underground rail and metro systems and for road tunnels. Some of the rail projects include HS2, Crossrail, London Underground (e.g. Victoria Station Upgrade, Northern Line Extension, London Overground), Heathrow Rail and metro systems across the Globe; North America (Bay Area Rapid Transit Silicon Valley Extension, Vancouver Millennium Line Extension), Australasia (Sydney Metro, Auckland City Rail Link), and the Asia-Pacific region (Hong Kong Airport tunnels, Changi Airport). Some of our road tunnel projects include the refurbishment of Heathrow road tunnels, Blackwall Northbound Tunnel, and Area 4 tunnels Roundhill and Southwick.
