We are looking for an experienced engineer (or similar) to work with an industry respected group of rolling stock mechanical specialists who provide technical support in rail projects at all levels of the industry from heritage fleets to new build rolling stock. This includes design, compliance, incident investigation, vehicle refurbishments and life extension. Our acquisition of Atkins has given us access to larger industry leading projects.
This is an opportunity for you to utilize a range of consultancy skills including expert judgement, hand calculation, computational analysis and development of bespoke analysis routines and processes. The team has a wide client base including train and equipment manufacturers, operators, owners and over haulers.
Job Description
In this role you will be responsible for the delivery of mechanical engineering projects to clients or internal project teams. A key requirement of the role is to support our Mechanical Systems team although work on other projects is expected.
Key responsibilities:
- Understand client requirements and aspirations to identify and agree scopes of work;
- Develop costed proposals (full scope or specific elements of scope for multi-discipline jobs);
- Deliver high quality work to clients according to agreed timescales and budgets;
- Provide specialist technical expertise to other delivery teams to support delivery of multi-disciplinary projects;
- Maintain a working understanding of relevant standards;
- Support the development of other colleagues through knowledge and experience transfer; and
- Authoring, checking and approval of technical reports.
Example work activities:
The role does not necessarily require applicants with experience in all of the following areas, these are provided as examples.
Supporting train manufacturers, owners and operators in:
- The introduction of new rolling stock through design scrutiny in support of the Certification Body;
- Cost reduction through component condition assessment and maintenance optimization
- Investigation of in-service issues / problem solving;
- Devising practical repair solutions;
- Improving system reliability through the review of fault data and recommendation for modifications;
- Undertake Project Manager/Project Director role for projects managed by the Mechanical Systems team; and
- Identify technical, commercial and safety risks associated with projects and ensure these are managed through each project phase.
Experience is required in some or all of the following areas:
- Bogies and suspension;
- Wheelsets;
- Bearings;
- Braking systems and performance;
- Doors; and
- Corrosion repairs and fabrication.
