Job Overview:
To operate the CNC Milling machine and produce machined components to the production plan, in a safe and efficient manner, within the planned production time and to the required quality.
Role Responsibilties:
- To load/unload to/from machine the work piece in the correct order and orientation in a safe and efficient manner.
- In accordance with the manufacturing instructions to load the required NC program (s) prior to machining. To select the correct program when required.
- In accordance with the set-up sheet, to load the required tools correctly prepared in the correct stations on the tool carousel prior to machining. To set all required machine parameters as per the set up sheet or manufacturing instructions.
- After loading the work-piece into the machining area, to ensure the work-piece is accurately datumed prior to machining. This must be repeated if the work-piece is moved during the machining cycle.
- To report any damage to cutters to the Supervisor/Tooling Engineer so that action may be taken.
- To store tooling in a secure and orderly manner.
- To maximise tool life by carefully monitoring wear rates.
- Whilst machining to operate the machine in a safe and responsible manner, monitoring machine and cutter performance at all times. The operator must develop a technique of thinking for the machine in order to anticipate potential problems or malfunctions.
- The operator must not leave the machine unattended whilst it is in cycle, and must ensure that other personnel are not endangered by the operations of the machine, particularly by contact from machinery parts.
- Programs are to be modified generally by the NC Programmer. Minor changes, which do not affect product geometry, may be undertaken by an operator, but the NC Programmer must be informed of the change. In the event of program changes the operator is responsible for saving the modified program, uploading it to the designated area for the attention of the NC Programmer.
- To inspect products either on completion of machining or as a pre-machining or in process check as specified in the manufacturing instruction. This may involve the use of conventional measurement techniques using gauges or instruments and templates.
- To carry out required machine parameter changes associated with the set up.
- To test/dry run new or modified programs using appropriate machine functions and making required adjustments to machine and tool offsets to achieve the required size.
- To use the SFDC system to record both direct and indirect works in line with the Companys procedures.
- To report possible or known errors in manufacturing instruction or other associated documentation to the Supervisor.
- To keep the machine (and associated rail handling equipment) and work area clean and tidy at all times and to keep walkways clear.
Role Requirements:
- As a minimum; City & Guilds Setter/Operator and Part Programming or have completed a short course on CNC Appreciation or have;
- CNC Operator experience, with some programming knowledge
- Know how to load/unload problems to/from the machine;
- Ability to carry out a syntax check and have the ability to diagnose errors;
- How to restart a program mid-cycle by either using reposition function or block search with calculation;
- Be capable of homing the machine after resetting;
- To carry out tool changes in MDI;
- Understand tool and fixture offsets; to know where to access them and how to change them to achieve the required tolerances;
- Understand the basic structure of a program and identify spindle direction, speed and feeds, etc;
- Understand the principle of M and G codes used within the program and give examples of their application.
