Deputy Director, Chief Inspector of Rail Accidents

The Department for Transport (DfT)

Pay Band 1

Locations: Derby and Farnborough

Reference: 143083

The Department for Transport (DfT) is a truly unique place in which to further your career. We are responsible for delivering a high-quality transport network that will connect the British public, and enable our economy to grow. From motorways that are suitable for the transportation of goods, through to bus networks and safe cycle routes that will link-up communities, our remit is far reaching. We now have an exciting opportunity for a professional from the rail industry (or a relevant safety critical sector) to join us in The Rail Accident Investigation Branch (RAIB). This is an exceptional opportunity to join a team who have an international reputation for excellence.

Take on a nationally important role.

With the overarching aim of improving the safety of the UK's railway systems, you will be responsible for all issues relating to railway accidents investigations. Reporting directly to the Secretary of State for Transport, you will lead a team of professionals in providing independent and expert investigations, seeing to it that they are meeting the expected legislative standards, and that they are conducted thoroughly and efficiently. Maintaining open channels of communication, you will champion knowledge-sharing wherever possible, working with both the rail industry and other stakeholders (including the UK's investigating bodies such as the AAIB and MAIB) to deliver the best possible outcomes. This will include cooperating with equivalent stakeholders worldwide and attending the Accident Investigation Chiefs’ Council.

Help us deliver an even safer railway system.

This highly varied role would be well-suited to an inspirational leader who can recruit, retain and develop a talented and diverse team of professionals. As you will be representing RAIB both in the UK and internationally, you will have comprehensive communication skills, and you will have the diplomacy to sensitively engage with bereaved families and those who have been affected by accidents. From a practical viewpoint, you will have senior management experience ether in the rail industry or a similar safety critical sector, and you will be capable of making effective decisions when under pressure. Bringing credibility to all that you do, you will be capable of communicating safety learning from your investigations to the media and industry.

Expect a great role with the DfT.

We are a flexible and supportive organisation, and we are committed to providing our workforce with great workplaces in which they can thrive. In order to meet the challenges of the future and ensure that we are equipped to handle every challenge, we know that we must be representative of society. We are therefore passionate about diversity and inclusion, which is evidenced by our internal Race Action Plan, and the fact that we were listed as one of The Times Top 50 Employers for Women. Quite simply, we want to set standards that other organisations will seek to emulate. Furthermore, we will provide you with a great work-life balance that is enhanced by a competitive benefits package. This includes a desirable civil service pension, generous annual leave, flexible working options and ongoing training and development opportunities.
