Technical Director - Bridges & Structures in Bristol, avon, United Kingdom

We are looking for an individual to lead our bridge teams in the South-West and Wales (SW&W) who can combine excellent leadership and people management skills with the technical challenges of a fast-paced engineering sector. The SW&W bridge teams are based in the AECOM Bristol and Cardiff offices. You will be expected to divide your time between both locations as appropriate, with most of the team based in Bristol. Our National Bridges and Structures team consists of approx. 450 people and we offer a strong pipeline of exciting and challenging design and asset management projects.

Our SW&W team has an established track record of successfully delivering bridge and other transportation structures projects. The team provides input to projects throughout the infrastructure lifecycle from feasibility, preliminary and detailed stage designs for new assets to inspections, assessments, maintenance and refurbishment of existing assets, with a keen eye on sustainability as part of our delivery. The projects we deliver range from standalone bridge commissions, through to frameworks for ongoing delivery to supporting other parts of AECOM’s business on major multidisciplinary projects. Our clients are many and varied from both the private and public sector and include the major custodians of the UK’s road and rail network, numerous local authorities, private developers and major Contractors.

Current projects include a major UK 5-year rail network infrastructure framework assessment contract, West of England consultancy framework, special inspection of a wide variety of post-tensioned bridges and bridge strengthening and repairs designs.

Job Summary

You will provide day-to-day leadership of the bridges and structures team in Bristol/Cardiff to ensure that their performance supports the Southern Region plan.

You will be responsible for:

  • The team safety culture and performance. You will ensure safety is the primary concern of all team members working in the office or on-site. This will include regular cascading of safety briefs to their team, ensuring risk assessments are carried out for all work and safety control measures implemented as appropriate. You will encourage the reporting of incidents and near misses by team members and will report regular safety observations and senior management observations.

  • Stakeholder relationships. You will coordinate and contribute to the local work winning and business development activities, actively developing and maintaining relationships with local government and contractor clients and stakeholders. You will be required to assist with the production of proposals for new commissions and undertake reviews of commercial proposals matched to resourcing schedules

  • Accuracy of data provided to the Operations Lead and Regional Lead for projects led by the Croydon office. Information reported on will included leading and lagging indicators of both technical excellence performance and financial performance of the team.

  • You will play a key role in defining and influencing the workplace culture. You will set the tone for communication and collaboration within the team, raising morale and job satisfaction, increasing productivity and efficiency in a positive and supportive environment.

  • You will set a clear ethos and values for the team, foster collaboration and communications and create an inclusive work environment. You will create clear goals and rewards for the team.

  • Office resource plans. You will maintain resource plans, matching the pipeline of project work and future opportunities with resources in the team. You will ensure future opportunities are identified and tracked and that records are kept up to date within the tracking software.

  • Project management performance. You will work closely with the Operations Lead and with the Project Managers in their team to monitor project performance and identify early interventions to maintain or exceed project performance goals.

  • Utilisation of individuals in their team. You will collaborate with other office leads in the region and across the UK to ensure project resource requirements are met and utilisation targets for the office are maintained.

  • Recruitment. You will work with Talent Acquisition team.

Minimum Requirements

Your skills profile will include excellent leadership qualities and a strong track record of managing technical teams. Additionally, you will be expected to be involved in the delivery of bridge and structures projects. There is a wide variety of challenging and exciting new-build design and asset management projects being undertaken by the Bristol/Cardiff teams and you will be expected to be available to undertake a number of possible project roles, such as Technical Lead, CRE, Lead Verifier, Project Manager or Project Director as appropriate.

We are looking for someone who is as passionate about design as they are about mentoring and developing colleagues and junior members of the team.

You will be required to have excellent professional communication skills both oral and written and the ability to understand and challenge design outputs from computer modelling and design software associated with the design and assessment of bridges.

You must be experienced in the management of multiple teams and have had involvement in the production of detailed design and assessment information, technical reports, drawings, tender documents & specifications for public and private developments, and be familiar with the UK and international design and assessment standards such as Eurocodes, AASHTO, Network Rail Standards, DMRB, etc. that are commonly used for design and assessment of bridges and other civil engineering structures. Chartered status with a relevant professional body and a strong CV confirming performance in a similar role.

Preferred Qualifications

MSc level or equivalent in Civil/Structural Engineering.
