Our client, a leading organisation within the rail sector is looking to recruit a Principal Environmental and Sustainability Officer.

• Lead the provision of comprehensive environmental policy and strategy capacity
• Lead coordination across work streams on the development of strategy and policy
• Lead the delivery and implementation of environmental objectives
• Lead the development and implementation a decarbonisation pathway
• Programme management of the environmental and sustainability work-stream in compliance with agreed procedures and guidelines.
• Commission studies to support delivery of environmental and sustainability work-streams
• Engagement with key stakeholders and partners in the development and delivery of objectives

The successful candidate will have significant experience in the following:

• Advising on environmental and sustainability issues and principles.
• Understanding of national and regional transport policy context.
• Understanding of national and local transport policy and regulatory frameworks.
• Specialist knowledge and experience in the evaluation, interpretation and application of environmental legislation.
• Working across transport strategy and policy, with the ability to align outputs from a number of specialisms.
• Working in complex strategy and policy situations for the development and approval of business cases and outlining implementation.
• Co-ordinating a range of cross cutting, complex strategy and policy initiatives into a cohesive output.
• Planning and organising own work and the work of others (internal or external) over the medium term.
• A confident communicator at a senior level who is able to influence a wide range of stakeholders, partners and senior colleagues.
• Experience of managing complex budgets and undertaking accurate monthly project and programme reporting.
• Reputation, ability and confidence to represent in public, professional and stakeholder forums at a regional level.
• An ability to critically analyse and interpret technical data, proposals or standards.
• Acts as a subject matter expert, and regularly leads small teams of internal/external specialists.
• Requires sufficient strategic expertise to contribute across a wider remit of transport strategies as an expert, ensuring strategies are aligned.
