Job Description
This role relates to the National Freight ETCS Project interacting with Network Rail, the ETCS equipment supplier, design houses and all freight operators.
The role supports a FOC in the design review and fitment of ETCS to their vehicles. You will be assigned a FOC and will be their MBRC contact.
Over time there may be other projects to which the candidate is suited and allocated to furthering the Company’s aims of maintaining a diverse client portfolio.
The main tasks will be:
• MBRC Contact to assist with review of:
o Design drawings
o Safety and Assurance outputs
o Human Factors outputs
o All other design-related output
o Ensuring consistency with other FOC designs
• Offer support and reminders regarding approaching deadlines for return of comments on produced documentation.
• Site presence during FiC and, where required, Fleet fitments
• Report to MBRC regarding progress with all design and fitment matters regarding this FOC.
Note: MBRC staff are already present in the Operations group (Assurance & PIU process lead) and the Engineering Group (Chair, Project Engineer & Engineering Assistant).
Location
The base location will be Edinburgh, however (Covid permitting) there is a significant amount of travel to London, Crewe and the Midlands. The candidate must be willing to travel within the UK including overnight stays during the week whenever required.
During design periods this will amount to roughly 50% of time away from Edinburgh, during FiC fitment periods this will be close to 100%.
Requirements
The successful candidate must possess:
• Experience in reading technical drawings
• Experience with vehicle maintenance/fitment (this may be from a managerial view rather than hands on)
• Awareness of Hazard Identification (HazIds)
• Awareness of Risk Assessment
• Awareness of Common Safety Method Regulations (CSM)
• Awareness of Technical Standards for Interoperability as relates to locomotives (TSIs)
• Awareness of Process for Approval for Placing into Service (APIS)
• Awareness of Railway Undertaking processes for Placing into Use (PIU)
• Awareness of Railway Undertaking processes for Engineering Change
• Awareness of Railway Locomotive Maintenance
• Awareness of Railway Operations
In addition, the following traits are required:
• Excellent work ethic

• Lateral and creative thinking
• Ability to work unsupervised
Desirable
In addition, it would be of benefit if the candidate has prior experience of:
• ETCS on board equipment
• Freight Operators
• Network Rail Projects
Education & Experience
Either:
• Degree 2:1 or above in a STEM field, preferably Engineering, and
• 5 Years’ Rail Industry experience in a relevant role
Or:
• 8 Years’ Rail Industry experience in a relevant role
Annual Leave
• 35 days annual leave including 2 weeks shutdown for Christmas
