Project Manager in York, United Kingdom

Project Manager (Rail Depots and Stabling) York

At Northern, we play a vital role across the North by providing a reliable and friendly train service that helps hundreds of thousands of people to go do their thing. That's over 2,000 services every day, travelling to over 500 destinations.

We're here to make a positive impact for the North. And that means building a different kind of workplace. One that values individuality and celebrates differences. Somewhere we can work together, have fun, and do whatever it takes to make our customers’ lives easier. A place that encourages everyone to learn, grow and develop so we can all be our best every single day.

So, if you’re smart, forward thinking, passionate and full of fresh ideas like we are, you could play your part in making it happen.

As a TRU Depots and Stabling Project Manager, you’ll be responsible for managing a number of infrastructure projects that we’re working on across the Northern network. This includes major infrastructure renewal and enhancement schemes and means that your day-to-day will be incredibly varied and exciting. Your primary focus will be to manage Northern’s depot and stabling projects related to the TransPennine Route Upgrade (TRU).

On an average day, you’ll work with the Programme Manager (Infrastructure Change) to ensure you coordinate your efforts in the management of a portfolio of depot-related infrastructure projects. In conjunction with both Northern and the Network Rail TRU programme team, you’ll identify and manage interdependencies within the overall programme. You’ll represent Northern at relevant industry working groups and ensure that our strategic interests are both communicated and protected.

We’re looking for someone who is educated to degree level or who can showcase substantial relevant experience in managing complex projects. You should preferably also have a Project Management qualification and membership to a professional body.

The ideal candidate would have previous experience of working within the railway operating environment, and have a working knowledge of rolling stock and depot facilities and equipment. It would be beneficial to have experience managing construction projects and a strong understanding of health, safety and environmental legislation and CDM regulations.

You'll also need to share our values, too. They reflect what's important to the way we work, which means we look for the same in everyone who joins us...

  • Make the difference - We never settle for okay. We pursue perfection, seek out better ways and always look to improve.
  • Make it last - What we do today affects tomorrow, so we look after the environment, our communities and each other.
  • Make it yours - We're proud to be who we are. We don't hide our personality, we let it shine and bring our best every day.
  • Make it easy - Who likes complicated? We keep things simple, help each other out, and always find solutions.
  • Make it happen - We get the job done. Our expertise and knowledge mean we see things through. Because we value our people and reward hard work, we’ve created a benefits package that we think you’ll love.

So, you’ll be able to make the most of:

  • Opportunities to progress and grow - including comprehensive training schemes and a range of online learning courses.
  • Agile working for non-train crew - many of our roles can now be based at both home and the office, which is great if you’r looking for flexibility.
  • Cycle to Work Scheme - save up to 42% on the cost of a bike, while also spreading your payments throughout the year.
  • Recognition Programmes - from our Loyalty Awards events to our Proud to be Northern Awards, we make sure our people know they’re appreciated.
  • Free Travel on Northern services - everyone who works at Northern, plus their partners/spouses and dependents, can travel for free right across our full network of services. *Certain eligibility criteria will apply.
  • 75% discount with other Train Operating Companies - after 1 year with us, you’ll also get discounted travel on many other rail services in the UK and Europe.
  • Defined Benefit Pension Scheme - you’ll rarely find a pension as good as a Northern pension, and we top up your pension with a generous 1.5 times your contribution.
  • A generous holiday entitlement - our incredibly generous holiday entitlements can help you feel like you can get away too.
  • Maternity and Paternity Benefits - we go above and beyond the standard, and mums can enjoy 9 months’ maternity leave on full pay while dads can make the most of 2 weeks’ paternity leave on full pay.
  • Employee Assistance Programme - advice, support and useful information 24 hours a day, 365 days a year on everything from family issues to lifestyle matters.
  • Exclusive benefits with Northern Perks - enjoy retail discounts, instant vouchers, cashback, wellbeing support and much more.
  • Holiday Purchase Scheme - if you join us at Manager or Executive level or above, you can use your salary to buy up to 5 additional days of annual leave each year.
