Senior Railway Specialist & Project Director
Location: Birmingham
Salary: £65k to £85k depending on experience
DESCRIPTION
A highly experienced Project Manager with a professional engineering degree and with extensive relevant experience in the railway sector. The successful candidate must demonstrate the ability to implement, deliver and close complex project requirements with a proven track record in successful delivery and have strong organisation and leadership skills. The Project Manager is accountable for all engineering design management and the management of multi-disciplinary contracts including all activities relating to the contract provisions. This includes the preparation and management of project plans, progress reporting and attending the Project Review Meetings.
This is a senior engineering management position working for IDOM, an international engineering consultancy. This role is the Project Director and Senior Railway Team Leader on a heavy rail project. Reporting to Director of Railways.
Initial appointment is to an 18 month project based overseas in a Commonwealth country, which will require you to be located within the country for most of this period. Based on a successful project outcome, you would become a full member of the railway department with a focus on securing and delivering similar projects within the UK, Europe and worldwide. Permanent location would have some flexibility, subject to agreement.
International travel is an essential part of this role so candidates must be acceptant of this requirement before applying.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
- The following is referenced to the initial project but would also be applicable to all future works.
- Deliver the project and contract management services in accordance with the scope of the contract.
- Supervise design and development activities by the project team and project partners in view of fulfilling the customer requirements, in project phases.
- Review designer's (internal and external) submissions (baselines, documentation, technical design, etc.) and coordinate review and submissions with other relevant parties.
- Align with railway technical authorities and standards in the project country.
- Manage the team of experts in all engineering and technical disciplines.
- Monitor expenditure against contract and ensure that actual spend profiles are within contract budget.
- Accountable for contractual performance and reporting on performance to the client.
- Project Programme compliance ensuring that all plans are produced in the required format/hierarchy/structure and contain the relevant information.
- Monitor and review contract performance through agreed performance measures.
- Conduct regular meetings, internally and with the client as appropriate at the Project Review Meetings.
- Prepare reports on contract performance, budgetary variations and progress against plan.
- Client and stakeholder management on all project related matters.
- Developing, managing and efficient delivery of the mobilisation and demobilisation stages of the contract.
- Ensuring that all resources are in place for the delivery of the Services. This will require close coordination with project partners.
- Manage any contract disputes that may arise and subsequently escalating when necessary.
- Organise work in compliance with Health and Safety regulations and policies.
TECHNICAL COMPETENCIES
ESSENTIAL
- Engineering Degree – Railway related discipline
- Minimum of 20 years experience within the rail industry. 10 years in planning, preparation and design of railway systems and projects, at least 5 years as project team leader for projects of similar scale and scope. Any candidates who may not have the number of years’ experience required but can demonstrate the necessary skills in combination with directly relevant experience may apply and will be considered.
- Previous relevant experience in a similar role within the rail industry.
- Track record of project management experience delivering complex medium and large-scale projects.
- Ability to undertake technical and safety reviews in a wide range of areas.
- Produce detailed, high quality regular reports for internal and external stakeholders.
- Experience of managing and developing a project team.
- Detailed knowledge of Health, Safety, Quality and Environment standards and systems.
- Risk identification and control.
- Strong contract management and client relationship building attributes.
- Knowledge of commercial and financial procedures.
DESIRABLE
- Post-graduate qualification in relevant subject
- Project management qualifications.
- Chartered Engineer.

- Some Spanish would be beneficial, but not essential.
