Senior Telecoms Designer / Telecoms Project Engineer in United Kingdom

OVERALL PURPOSE:

To ensure all engineering activities in connection with the design and implementation of project work are co-ordinated and technically compliant to Client and Company Standards. Identify any changes to scope and initiate change requests. Act as the main engineering point of contact. Work as an integral part of the project team.

PRINCIPAL ACCOUNTABILITIES OR MAIN TASKS:


  • Act as a Telecoms CEM, CRE or Senior Engineer on allocated schemes as required.
  • Act as engineering contact and liaison with team members, clients and sub contractors in order to resolve any technical issues.
  • Act as a Lead Design Engineer responsible for the production and checking of all design details associated with Telecoms schemes.
  • Produce and direct the preparation of schematics, estimates and working drawings for Telecoms works within the project team to meet laid down timescales and authorised expenditure constraints.
  • Ensure the application and implementation of all established standards and specifications for company, Network Rail and statutory (DOT), including CDM principles.
  • Production, checking and issue of Telecoms schematics, diagrams and working drawings to confirm the quality of product and enable construction work to take place within the prescribed timescale.
  • Liaise with Project Manager/Client to ascertain project requirements and understand project remit.
  • Work closely with Project Manager ensuring all cost targets are met.
  • Ensure that changes to scope and specifications are managed, issues are raised and that risk registers are robustly reviewed.
  • Provide engineering support to the preparation of target costs.
  • Ensure successful and safe design and delivery of project remit.
  • Provide engineering support/input in preparation of project program.
  • Monitor progress against the project program and taking necessary action when required.
  • Ensure allocated contracts are technically compliant with relevant client and company standards.
  • Consider the impact of new or altered Telecoms documentation on allocated contracts.
  • Monitor design errors and make recommendations to stop re-occurrence.
  • As CEM/CRE, chair/attend IDC meetings for allocated schemes.
  • Preparation of Work Package Plans, Task Briefings and Risk Assessments.
  • Undertake site surveys.
  • Input of information and periodic reporting.
  • Liaise with Principle Project Engineer (Telecoms) and Design Manager (Telecoms) to establish and introduce best practice throughout the business.
  • Prepare and deliver briefings to staff on technical, procedural and Handbook publications, including participation in relevant training.
  • Forecast manpower requirements for all design work and associated testing and commissioning commitments to enable allocation of resources to be made.
  • Keep accurate records of project documentation.
  • Carry out testing if required and competent to do so.
  • Carry out safety and quality inspections.
  • Ensure the successful delivery of the handback phase of schemes.
  • Assist in staff welfare/development/training.
  • Act as Line Manager as required.
  • Act as a mentor for less experienced staff as required.
  • Undertake the role of Principal Engineer, as required.
  • Production of estimates, programmes and engineering solutions as part of project tenders

  • PERFORMANCE CRITERIA:

    • Comply with requirements of workload and programme e.g. design and safety documents produced to specific timescales, orders placed timeously, client reports prepared timeously.
    • Experienced in all categories of Railway Telecoms engineering.
    • Competent in design production techniques and skills for Telecoms systems.
    • IRSE Log book.
    • PDR performance.

    PERSONAL SPECIFICATIONS


  • Qualifications & Experience

    • Appropriate educational and technical qualification e.g. HNC/HND/Degree.
    • IRSE Licence holder in an Engineering Manager category, 7.8.110.
    • Member of an appropriate professional institution.
    • Minimum of 5 years experience in Telecoms project work.
    • Good leadership qualities.
    • Flexible working approach
    • IT Literacy - Microsoft, Excel, P6 Planning and CAD.
    • Analytical.
    • Able to drive.
    • PTS.

    Additional Information

    • Will be required to work away from home.
