Engineering and Quality Director in UK, United Kingdom

We are currently searching for an Engineering and Quality Director to join AECOM and sit within the Rail Bridges and structures team. You will be a specialist in this area and feel comfortable with technical leadership of 1000 people.
Your responsibilities will cover everything related to the engineering capability within the Rail, Bridges and Structures sector: from safety and quality in design; to professional development, competency assessment and management; technical training and development; development of technical strategy and capability growth; and ensuring appropriate review and verification of work before it is issued.
As the Engineering and Quality Director will work collaboratively with the Regional Leads, the SHE Lead, WW Lead, Operations Lead, technical leads for other end markets, the EMEA Technical Director and external stakeholder technical authorities.
There are a few locations to which this position can be based: London, Manchester, Birmingham and Glasgow.
Responsibilities:
  • Ensure that all projects have appropriate technical oversight; and that this oversight is consistent and adds value
  • Manage the pool of lead verifiers and ensure there are development plans to maintain and grow competence in this pool of resources
  • Lead technical excellence and communication amongst the CEM/PM community – sharing lessons learned, best practice and topical issues.
  • Lead the development of relevant technical strategies e.g. digital, BIM, AI, libraries of standard models, drawing sets etc. in support to RB&S capabilities and client offerings
  • Ensure that relationships are built and maintained with relevant Professional Engineering Institutes.
  • Ensure that the Heads of Discipline have professional development plans for all members of staff who are pursuing professional qualifications and that appropriate mentors are in place
  • Lead initiatives to promote quality and develop capability therein
  • Lead initiatives to develop and execute job rotation schemes within RB&S for apprentices and graduates that allows participants to experience multiple disciplines
Work Winning/ clients
  • Develop/maintain key client and supply chain relationships
  • Support key bids and frameworks as required
  • Engage in relevant technical for a with relevant client organisations (Network Rail, Highways England, TfL etc.) and their technical events / activities
  • Attend and actively participate in the NR CAM and cascade messages as appropriate
  • Line management of the Professional Heads of Discipline (Track, Pway, Civils, Signaling, E&P, Telcomms, Light Rail, Assurance and Advisory, Digital, Bridges and Structures, Railway Systems etc – exact mix depends on the background of the E&Q Dir)
  • Ensure that RB&S has the appropriate professional discipline structure, succession and development plans in each region
  • Manage the competency framework for RB&S
  • Ownership of the technical training budget for RB&S
  • Manage the annual reviews/ assessments of all identified CEMs and maintain records
  • Develop tools and processes to manage competences, assessments and training
  • Promote a culture of technical excellence and development
  • Instil a culture where others share knowledge, insights and learning
  • Represent the R, B&S Director when required
  • Lead the safety culture within the technical teams
  • Work collaboratively with the RB&S SHE Lead on delivery of Rail Safety Week and encourage peer group engagement
  • Ensure that important safety initiatives (e.g. Design close calls) become part of ‘business as usual
Minimum Requirements:
  • Experienced in leading and motivating multi-disciplinary engineering teams and managing competences
  • Experienced in developing and using tools and processes to improve efficiency and effectiveness technical management
  • Passionate about technical excellence and quality
  • Experienced in bidding and leading major infrastructure design and/or asset management
  • Strategic thinker
  • Literate, numerate and articulate
  • Sound commercial understanding
  • Understanding of the process and practices involved in the design and delivery of projects in the contemporary railway and highway sectors.
  • Flexible and proactive approach
  • Previous experience in an Engineering Director role
  • Experience in engineering design and/or asset management in consultancy, rail or construction sector
  • Confident and knowledgeable in the importance of safety and quality in design
  • Chartered Engineer
