The role
An opportunity has arisen within Metro and Rail Projects (MRP) for a Senior Quantity Surveyor, reporting to the Commercial Manager.
Metro and Rail Projects (MRP) have extensive experience of working on high profile projects for most of the UK's light rail and tram operators and on the UK heavy rail network. We are recognised as a market leader for the provision of renewal and minor enhancements services to the light rail sector and as a supplier of choice to the wider rail market.
Our specialist teams continue to offer high quality track construction, maintenance and renewals to a wide range of clients including: Nottingham Express Transit, Manchester Metrolink, Sheffield Supertram, and London Tramlink as well as a number of Major Contractors on the heavy rail network.
Key accountabilities
This role will involve:
- Production of monthly accounting, costing, contract, management and financial information on a timely basis for inclusion in the monthly accounts package.
- Briefing the Project Manager on the bill of quantities, specification and contractual implications of ongoing and new projects.
- Liaison with the Project Managers, regarding ongoing costs, current position and variations in contracts.
- The monitoring of costs against tender/contract specifications and agreements. Advising the Commercial Manager immediately of any major problem areas.
- Liaison with Clients giving and receiving costing information with regard to ongoing contracts, notifying clients using the appropriate methods of any variations to cost or specification and gaining the relevant authorisation. Raising any variation orders or claims as appropriate.
- Ensuring the Company's contractual obligations with regard to cost control is met, using the appropriate standards and methods.
- Assisting the Commercial Manager in the preparation of tender enquiries, responses and the determination of the Company's charging structures.
- To ensure that best value is achieved internally and from all sub-contractors and suppliers. To identify and recommend any areas for improvement to the relevant Manager or General Manager.
- To collate appropriate levels and range of departmental performance based reporting and associated information. Preparation and delivery of monthly reports and key performance indicators to their Line Manager.
- In conjunction with their Line Manager and the Finance Manager, set and review annual budgets, future capital expenditure budgets/proposals, ensure compliance with the Company's financial authority's procedure, monitors and reports on costs and ensures that departmental activity is within agreed budgets and authorities.
- Responsible for ensuring robust and effective paths of information/communication/dissemination within both their department and the organisation as a whole.
- Responsibility within the Project Team to ensure projects are setup on the company accounting system with a suitable Work Breakdown Structure.
- Responsibility for inputting budget & tender data from successful tenders into the Company accounting/Reporting System.
- Responsibility within the Commercial Department and Project Team with the preparation of the monthly project reports from the Company accounting/Reporting System for both internal & client purposes.
- Responsibility for the preparation of the monthly Applications and Invoicing to ensure submission in a timely manner of an accurate document aimed at maximising the company's financial position.
Skill & Experience
You will be self-motivated with a pro-active approach and have experience of managing fluctuating workloads, working under pressure, meeting tight deadlines and working off your own initiative. A high level of accuracy and attention to detail is essential.
To be considered for this role you must have:
- The successful candidate will have gained extensive experience in the role of Senior Quantity Surveyor within a rail contracting environment
- Must have Degree or equivalent in Quantity Surveying.
- Ideally working towards chartered Surveyor or equivalent membership.
- Computer literate and working knowledge in Microsoft office applications.
- Previous experience of COINs would be advantageous.
