The Role
An opportunity has arisen for a Construction Manager (Track) to join VolkerRail Metro & Rail Projects.
Metro and Rail Projects (MRP) have extensive experience of working on high profile projects for most of the UK's light rail and tram operators and on the UK heavy rail network. We are recognised as a market leader for the provision of renewal and minor enhancements services to the light rail sector and as a supplier of choice to the wider rail market.
Our specialist teams continue to offer high quality track construction, maintenance and renewals to a wide range of clients including: Nottingham Express Transit, Manchester Metrolink, Sheffield Supertram, and London Tramlink as well as a number of Major Contractors on the heavy rail network.
Key Accountabilities
You will have the following accountabilities:
- Responsible for ensuring all activities are in compliance with Company standards and procedures.
- Lead, motivate and direct staff in Production to complete the programme works to the required specification, in a safe and compliant manner and at least cost to VolkerRail.
- Determine methods of work and plant to be used on site. Seek alternative methods to improve productivity, safety and quality.
- Produce and review of methodology, safety plans and train workings. Ensure contingencies are in place, all risks are controlled and make improvements as appropriate.
- Monitor performance of Supervisors and give guidance on planning, preparation and implementation of works, ensuring action plans are produced to address shortfalls.
- Ensure resource allocation is compliant and in line with construction budgets, reporting any deviance to the Project Manager.
- Monitor work progressed against programme and specification. Initiate changes to deficiencies and advise the Project Manager accordingly.
- Responsible for ensuring that initial site briefings are carried out prior to any work commencing.
- Ensure close liaison and communication with other parts of the VolkerRail business.
- Supervise Plant and machinery where necessary to carry out works in a safe compliant manner.
- Manage staff discipline, appraisals, rostering and identifying progress and training needs.
- Responsible for ensuring the Site Access Controller (where provided) maintains all site safety and delivery records relevant to the project on a shift by shift basis. Undertake relevant duties if a Site Access Manager is not provided.
- Responsible for ensuring that each site is maintained in a clean and tidy state both during the work and in particular at the end of each shift.
- Responsible for the production of accurate contemporary site records and liaison with the Project Engineer and Quantity Surveyor.
- Ensure the material and plant resource requirements are issued to the depot supervisor and that they are delivered and stored safely.
- Provide level 1 on-call assistance to the Project Manager.
Skills & Experience
You will be self-motivated with a pro-active approach and have experience of managing fluctuating workloads, working under pressure, meeting tight deadlines and working off your own initiative.
To be considered for this role you should ideally have:
- HNC in Civil Engineering (or equivalent)
- Proven experience in Railway construction or industrial building and construction
- Demonstrable experience of Construction Manager role
- Good knowledge and understanding of track standards, processes and procedures
- Ideally hold COSS SW1
- Confidence and ability to assert influence.
- Computer literate and working knowledge in Microsoft office applications.
