Track Engineer in Poplar, Tower Hamlets, London, United Kingdom

We are looking for a Track Engineer to join our Infrastructure team. The post holder will be expected to provide engineering assurance, technical expertise, direction and support to our maintenance and projects teams. The Engineer will also be expected to work with our track assets and associated systems to ensure a safe, reliable and efficient operation of our railway.

Key Accountabilities

  • Asset Maintenance and Performance - Contribute to the production and on-going development of asset maintenance strategies in line with ISO55000 and to the implementation of the strategy. Monitor performance, investigate significant failures and those requiring expert knowledge and recommend enhancements to assets, operations or maintenance to achieve sustained performance improvement. Perform practical and theoretical analysis to produce solutions to engineering problems. Contribute to the annual maintenance and capital replacement plans.
  • Projects - Oversee design of track assets and their construction on site, ensuring all installations are compliant with specifications, standards and best practice. Undertake safety inspections and site acceptance testing of new and modified assets. Review Project documentation pre/during/post Project completion.
  • Continual Improvement - Investigate and review best industry practice in railway construction and maintenance (e.g. from British and international standards, Amey, other light rail operations and other industries) and recommend changes to existing practices. Investigate and review existing and emerging technology and recommend application to the DLR system as appropriate. Support business case development and manage the implementation of best practice and new technology
  • Assurance - Provide professional technical support and guidance to the maintenance department and the whole business. Investigate incidents with technical aspects, in operations, maintenance and projects, produce reports and make recommendations. Support the technical audit programme, including supplier audits as required. Contribute to the development and implementation of any assurance plans. Accredited as a Designated Competent Person under the DLRL Change Assurance Process (CAP).
  • Quality - Set the standards and specifications for track assets, components, and works undertaken on the railway.
  • Standards, Specifications, Procedures and Instructions - Review engineering technical specifications and make approval recommendations. Recommend changes in any required revisions to the DLR standards. Recommend changes to asset maintenance, together with supporting justification. Support the maintenance managers in the production and continuous improvement of maintenance procedures and maintenance task instructions and make approval recommendations. Comment on technical aspects of project procedures. Review and support continuous improvement to standard operating procedures and other company procedures as required.
  • Professional Standards - Promote, by example, professional attitudes to working relationships within KAD, with DLRL and other stakeholders. Contribute to a strong team working culture, especially between engineering and other teams.

Essential/Desirable Skills/Qualifications

  • A relevant engineering degree. Chartered Engineer or Incorporated Engineer actively working to CEng.
  • A minimum of 5 years’ experience of civil and/or track engineering, including maintenance and relevant projects.
  • Competent to check and confirm that works are carried out to quality standards, agreed designs and method statements.
  • Competent to inspect and assess condition of railway civil and track assets.
  • Competent to produce technical reports, standards, procedures, specifications, method statements, risk assessments and drawings.
  • Good communications skills at all levels and computer literate.
  • Confident, persuasive and professional approach.
  • The ability to maintain confidentiality and display tact, diplomacy and discretion at all times.
  • Detailed knowledge of railway civil and track engineering standards and their application.
  • Knowledge and application of railway competency management systems and the Railways and Other Guided Systems (ROGS) regulations.
