About The Role

A new and fantastic opportunity has arisen for a motivated and dedicated individual to join our team in the capacity of a Principal Engineer (E&P).

Our Telecoms and E&P group have a proven record in project delivery from large to small multi/single discipline projects, providing engineering support and assurance on numerous regional and national rail frameworks throughout the UK. Working within the Project Engineering division, we have a team of experienced, flexible and multiskilled engineers with the right-first-time approach to delivery on an exciting and challenging portfolio.


Key Duties & Responsibilities

As a Principal Engineer you will be directly involved in supporting the successful and safe delivery of Project deliverables within Project team, ensuring that all reasonable care is taken to ensure that work is conducted professionally and safely and in accordance with agreed standards.

As part of your day to day role, you are accountable for the following.

  • Ownership and responsibility for the completion of technical and engineering tasks associated with a particular project in accordance with agreed quality, budget and timescales constraints.
  • Act in the role of Contractors Responsible Engineer (CRE)in line with NR/L2/INI/02009 for the core discipline for allocated projects.
  • Act in the role of Contractors Engineering Manager (CEM)in line with NR/L2/INI/02009 for allocated projects, ensuring coordination of all design disciplines inc external companies.
  • Act in the role of Network Rail DPE/ PE in line with the ACE principals and with NR/L2/INI/02009 for the core discipline for allocated projects.
  • Maintaining the budget responsibility for design delivery of the project and ensuring appropriate cost control measures implemented and upheld.
  • Managing change control for design delivery
  • Programme management for design delivery
  • Maintain own professional knowledge in relation to standards, practices and equipment.
  • Ensure compliance to legislation, rail industry and client standards through structured management audits and checks.

As part of your day to day role, you are responsible for the following.

  • Actively participate in the promotion and development of other team members, act as mentor
  • Ensure that all reasonable care is taken to ensure that work is conducted professionally and safely and in accordance with agreed standards.
  • Line Management responsibility for the design team resource, including staff dialogue and appraisals
  • Manages sub-contractors and suppliers to ensure effective and safe delivery of design.
  • Identify and Manage NR stakeholders in relation to design works
  • Producing accurate designers risk assessments using a wide variety of forms, including design risk log, design decision logs, CSM and project change logs
  • Demonstrate and implement “Safe by Design” principles in all designs
  • Production and management of the TQ & RFI process to ensure the suitable & timely closure with the client
  • Providing weekly reports outlining work plans, forecasts and key achievements
  • Implement processes and procedures described within the Linbrooke Services management system for projects / bids.
  • Undertake or participate in design reviews as required throughout the project lifecycle to ensure: compliance with Statutory, Industry, Mandatory and Linbrooke requirements, buildability and opportunities for efficiencies resulting in cost effectiveness.
  • Provide effective communication of information to facilitate compliance with Statutory, Industry, Mandatory and Linbrooke requirements for use by the projects team.
  • Establish and maintain project files including records of: work planned; work achieved; in process checks undertaken; change control; inspection and test documentation; compilation of H & S file; provision of as built information and handover/handback documentation.
  • Liaise with clients to ensure to ensure their requirements are understood and met
  • Undertake or participate in inquires and investigations as directed by Senior Management in accordance with Linbrooke Services Standards and Instructions
  • Responsible for design management within the engineering organisation including: the review of designs at tender stage as appropriate; input to sub contract documentation for procurement of design from third parties; undertaking of buildability reviews as required
  • Maintain up to date Authority to Work records.
  • Maintain one’s own CPD files and promote that of others.
  • Obtain/maintain professional membership at relevant institutions IET or IRSE
  • Support business process reviews
  • Undertake business and staff audit process and document accordingly.
  • Provide guidance and support as necessary to site teams to ensure: methodologies and processes for work delivery are developed; work undertaken is in accordance with the design, is compliant with client requirements and meets the required quality standard
  • Prepare technical, cost and programme information to support projects/bids.
  • Prepare bills of quantities / materials requests as necessary.
  • Prepare complex designs to support projects / bids.
  • Liaising with AutoCAD technicians in the production of drawings.
  • Prepare technical workscopes and remit sub-contractors as appropriate for project/bids.
  • Liaise and assist the HSQE team to ensure due regard is given to safety / quality and environmental issues associated with projects/bids.

Essential

  • Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal.
  • Excellent team member with organisational and time management skills.
  • IT literate – Microsoft Office including CAD software such as AutoCAD, Visio, Microstation J.
  • Demonstrate knowledge and experience of System Engineering
  • Well grounded base knowledge of manufacturing processes and techniques;
  • Commitment to continuous improvement and learning.
  • An ability to work as part of an integrated design team and undertake instructions from the Design Engineers
  • Keen to develop career and role to cost, programme and people management
  • Actively support improvement groups and industry bodies
  • Understanding of new product introduction tools and techniques;
  • Awareness of design evaluation and review techniques;
  • IT literate (competent user of MS products e.g. Excel).
  • Relevant Degree Related Subject or have substantial experience in a related discipline;
  • Strong analytical, technical and problem-solving skills;
  • Good communication skills internally, externally and with all management levels;
  • Driving licence.
  • Thorough knowledge of aspects of discipline engineering as applied to railway systems.
  • Good understanding and appreciation of the CDM Regulations.
