About Northern:

At Northern, we play a vital role across the North by providing a reliable and friendly train service that connects hundreds of thousands of people to work, leisure, education and more. Our customers trust us with over 2,300 services every weekday, and we travel to almost 550 destinations.

But our vision is about more than just train travel. It’s about setting a new standard for customer experiences. And that means building a different kind of workplace. One that values individuality and celebrates differences. Somewhere we can work together, have fun, and get stuck in to making our customers’ lives easier. A place that goes out of its way to create incredible opportunities for everyone to grow and be the best we can be every single day.

So, if you’re smart, forward thinking, passionate and full of fresh ideas like we are, you could play your part in making it happen.

Right now, we’re working hard to improve and modernise our Heaton depot, and the way we work there. It’s a transformational change for the depot, which means we’re looking for a strong and collaborative leader with the confidence and credibility to take us on that journey.

It’s a senior role and you’ll be responsible for leading, managing, motivating and energising both the depot leadership team and its workforce. It’s about meeting quality and performance targets across servicing, maintenance and repairs of Northern’s traction and rolling stock, while developing and driving specific depot projects.

Day to day, you’ll focus on improving the safety culture performance across the depot. You’ll work towards increased fleet reliability and availability. And you’ll build and promote a culture of continuous improvement while implementing performance-driven changes to the depot’s organisational structure.

What’s most important is that you already have a background in depot management, along with experience of railway vehicle engineering and production management. You’ll also have an engineering degree or be working towards one, together with an NEBOSH Certificate and ideally some managerial qualifications.

Above all, you’ll be a capable communicator and problem solver. You’ll have what it takes to make sound engineering and budgetary decisions. And you’ll be someone who can influence and inspire people across our business.

In return, you’ll be able to make the most of:

• Free Travel on Northern services for you and your family*
• 75% discount on all other Train Operating Companies leisure services*
• Pension Scheme
• A generous holiday entitlement
• Maternity and Paternity Benefits - above the statutory minimum
• Full uniform for frontline facing roles Employee Assistance Programme - operating 24/7, giving a wide range of advice, support and useful information for employees
• And many more!

Our selection process is designed to make joining Northern as smooth as possible. It helps us decide whether you’re the right person to deliver a great service to our customers. And it can also help you make sure we’re the right team for you, too.

Northern is an equal opportunities employer and a promoter of diversity and inclusion in the workplace.

If you’re ready to join a workplace where you can focus on being yourself and being your best, we’d love to hear from you. Whoever you are and whatever your background, there’s a great chance that you’ll fit right in at Northern.

The first thing you need to do is complete our online application form and tell us a little bit more about yourself. Once we have all your details, we’ll be in touch to let you know what happens next.
