About the role
We're looking for an Assistant Railway Operations Manager to join us as part of the SMR Senior Management team. Reporting to the Railway Operations Manager you’ll be responsible for ensuring that all Operational Duties are adequately covered to meet the requirements of the business, assisting in the preparation and running of traffic plans, manpower and supervision of traffic operations. You’ll ensure that periodic testing and maintenance for Rolling Stock has been carried out and is fit for use with all daily checks completed promptly and correctly with appropriate paperwork.
We work to a flexible policy in a in a unique environment during the Operating Season which runs from mid-March to the end of October, where rostered duties can change at short notice as the business demands, with late, weekend and standby duties being part of the role. You’ll also carry out specific duties during our closed season in preparation for the following year.
Essential
- Managerial skills and experience
- Experienced Health and Safety Management
- Experience in compliance reports and recommendations
- Possess a strong working knowledge of Office, particularly Excel
- Enthusiasm for a career in Rail, underpinned by a knowledge and understanding of our sector and work
- Have an analytical thought process
- Seek to improve existing ways of working, by finding efficiencies in processes
- The aptitude to work on your own initiative and be proactive in team building
Key Duties:
- Ensure all routine checks have been carried out and signed for prior to entering into service for the day
- Assist with the preparation and management of Traffic Control and Guard rostering
- Assist with the preparation and development of Standards of Competence for all Operational Roles (Drivers, Traffic Controllers, Guards etc.)
- Assist with the continued development of Health, Safety and Environmental Policy and Procedures
- Assist with the production of policy, procedure, training and competency paperwork
- Administer and monitor safety audits by department heads reporting directly to the Railway Operations Manager
- Ensure all work undertaken by staff is carried out in a conscientious and safe manner whilst maintaining compliance with the Company’s Operations Procedures and Health and Safety Policy
- Work in a pro-active manner with the Engineering Team, taking the lead where necessary to maintain effective operational running of trains
- Ensure that the Traffic rota is maintained and that all shift requirements are covered by the appropriately qualified staff
- Assist the Railway Operations Manager to define staff training requirements and standards
- Supervise Operational Role training and ensure that all training is completed efficiently and effectively
- Carry out late and weekend duties as per the Traffic Controller rota or Management rota
- Complete a Traffic Controller and a Guard duty at least once every month to avoid skill fade of guard skills and traffic operations skills
This is a permanent full-time position.
The salary range is £28k to £32k dependent on experience and qualifications.
